Help with Potentially Running Ethernet on Telephone Line

Sep 9, 2004 9:27AM PDT

Hello All,

I have a 4 pair wire (not sure if Cat5, I think so though) that was installed about 1 year ago from basement to the third floor of my house. 2 pairs of the wire are being used to run two telephone lines.

Would it be possible for me to run an Ethernet connection between two switches/hubs on the other 2 pair (4 wires)?

I have wireless today, but run a VOIP phone system/PBX in my house and the wireless is not designed for this. I think a cable would help my voice quality sound better vs wireless.

Thanks
Mike

Nope. . .

The different power levels of the two signals, untwisting and connecting the other two pairs, and the different frequencies involved will give you grief. The speed and response will be in the dirt at best, if you can get it to work at all. Run another Cat-5 wire.

The first one yes, the second one no.

The first one describes two signals in one sheath. The second one describes voice over data in one signal.

Thank you again....

FYI, I ask and curious about this thing because I see a lot of people start doing it (atleast talking about it -- mixing LAN and Phone/VOIP + home system/security/entertainment etc.--)

Thanks
