Question

Help with PC I built?

Jul 24, 2017 11:32AM PDT

Hey everyone, I am new to these forums and new to forums themselves. I never have really asked questions only just view.
So let me give you some details about my computer as I know that seems to help with problem solving and then I'll explain what is happening.

First off my hardware is

Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX X370-F
CPU: AMD Ryzen 1800X (Not overclocked)
RAM: (2 x 8GB) Trident Z RGB
GPU: MSI GTX 1070 Gaming Z
SSD1: 250GB Samsung 850
SSD2: 120GB HyperX
HDD: 1TB WD Black
Cooling: EKWB A240
PSU: Rosewill CAPSTONE 650M 650W

Whats Going On:

So I just recently upgraded to these new parts in my system. And to be honest, it hasn't been very stable since I got them. While I am just casually using my PC, there will be a pop sound come from my speakers, and my entire system will freeze. It won't shut off, just freeze. I don't know if it is worth noting that when this happens I cannot use my power button to turn off my PC I have to flip the switch on the PSU in order for it to turn off. After this happens and I try to turn it back on, 1 of three things happens.

1) Everything works perfectly fine and it'll turn right back on.
2) The system will come on and boot but gets stuck, according to the Q LED's on the motherboard, at the Boot process.
3) The motherboard will turn on completely and give power to all components but it doesn't show through the Q LED's what part of the process it is going through. It has no indication if it booting the RAM, CPU, VGA, or BOOT section of booting up. And after it appears that everything has power, there will be no "Delete to enter BIOS" section on my screen and the computer does not appear to be displaying at all.

Please if there is anybody that can help me with this let me know. I am in the middle of doing personal web development studying ( wanting to start my own business) and this happens to me and it is very frustrating. I also apologize if I posted this in the wrong section.

Thank you for all the help.

Clarification Request
Reseating RAM
Jul 27, 2017 4:02PM PDT

So just as an update, it seems that when this freeze happens, if I reseat my RAM it fixes it but then later it'll still do it again. Now I've read about Ryzen having compatibility issues with certain speeds of RAM. Mine is the trident z rgb 3000mhz but it's only running at 2133. Would it be okay to test out the 3000mhz since that's the standard of it? I feel like it would be okay since that's what it's rated for but I don't know. Please let me know your opinion. Thanks all to have been giving me tips! Means a lot!

Only one way to know.

My experience is faster settings are more prone to crash. BE SURE TO KEEP UP WITH THE MAKER'S BIOS UPDATES until it's stable.

For now my replies on Ryzen crashes is mostly nods and let folk deal with the makers until I see a solid fix come out.

Yup.

I hear that a lot with the new Ryzen systems. You are going to have to get back to the maker about the BIOS and issues.

Read https://www.reddit.com/r/PCMasterRace/wiki/builds and what they have to say about the Ryzen.

Not for folk that don't want to tinker or wait for fixes.

Could it also be PSU or just MOBO?
Jul 24, 2017 11:38AM PDT

Thank you for the quick reply! I will contact them then! I am anxious to have this fixed. Thank you! Do you think it would be the motherboard or could it also be my power supply as well?

I did check the PSU.
Jul 24, 2017 11:46AM PDT

And it's a single rail so should be fine. What made you think it's the PSU? Is there some whining noise from it or other clue?

If you want reliable, I would not build a Ryzen today. This will upset AMD fans so check the link I gave and see what they write there. I agree with that view.

You asked me what it was and my answer is the mobo, CPU is just new. May take time for bugs to be hammered out.

No cue just a thought
Jul 24, 2017 11:49AM PDT

I was just thinking it might have been not enough Wattage for my system but seeing as how the Ryzen uses less power than my previous build, AMD FX 8320, that shouldn't bee the issue at all.

I will take your word that it is just new and still working on bugs. If that's the case then I'm fine. As long as I don't have to go buy another motherboard or any new hardware I'm not going to complain. I can deal with the issues for now.

There's a clue!
Jul 24, 2017 11:59AM PDT

You wrote about an older CPU so is this a recycled PSU?

PSUs lose capacity over the years so using this as a clue, the PSU is now a suspect.

BUT and this is a biggy, the new Ryzen has way too many posts about issues. I'd RMA the CPU and board and pick something off the list at https://www.reddit.com/r/PCMasterRace/wiki/builds

Go to the mobo site and get the latest bios and drivers.

I've read there are ram issues with ryzen so it would be best to stick with what's on the support list.

Just realized I'm dumb

Just realized I have the first BIOS... I'm a moron... Lol

Nope. I didn't specifically call that out.

It was in my reference link which I copied below. I'll try harder to put this in the posts from now on.

Q: Should I consider AMD Ryzen?? (copy from the link given)

Q: Should I consider AMD Ryzen??

We would certainly recommend considering Ryzen for the more techie people. But remember, that the audience of this sub consists of people with varying technical knowledge. We don't want to make people update their own BIOS (and screwed it up) or simply run back and complain that the build guide was misguided. Super important to understand that we don't want people to be intimidated by the PC. This is especially important for the people who are rather new to the scene.

In addition to that, we may not have discovered its full potential just yet. Just around a month after the R7 was released, we already learned quite a lot, such as that you may need to update to the latest BIOS to use its full potential, you need fast RAM to fully utilize Ryzen, NVIDIA GPUs don't perform as well as AMD GPUs with Ryzen, etc. This kind of things may require you to spend extra budget for some new components later down the line.

And finally, software developers are still updating their apps or games to support Ryzen. Some games and apps have improved by over 20% just from an update. However, those are only of a few games and apps, while the vast majority of them are still not updated just yet, which means they still perform 20% slower than they should.

To put it short, Intel is the safer bet for now. Anyway, If you who know more about hardware, doing your own research is always the best way to go, and in that case you won't need the parts list in the first place, because you know exactly what you need.

I read that earlier
Jul 24, 2017 12:33PM PDT

Yeah I read that when I went to the link you provided earlier. I'm by no means any sort of hardware or coding expert. I simply just enjoy troubleshooting my own problems as I go along and that's why I don't mind having the ryzen. I don't usually ask questions directly, rather just read up on forums and what not but this was happening a lot and so I wanted to get a second opinion. I realized I have the first BIOS 0401 and am currently flashing 0809 so hopefully this will help with stability. Thank you for the links and insight!

Any update? Here's more. From Wikipedia.
Jul 25, 2017 11:47AM PDT
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryzen

"Known issues
The UEFI shipped with Ryzen compatible motherboards leads to hard system locks when an application executes certain sequences of FMA3 instructions.[49] AMD stated in mid March 2017 that the issue would be fixed via an update from motherboard manufacturers."

Hopefully just a BIOS change will fix that.

Mouse and Keyboard problems
Jul 25, 2017 11:51AM PDT

So right after I updated from 0401 BIOS to 0809 BIOS my mouse and keyboard we're not able to he used after the BIOS and none of the USB ports on my motherboard or front panel could be used. I eventually got them to work after power cycling a few times and changing some BIOS setting about occasionally it still does it and I can't use them until I power cycle a few more times.

That's the only news I have so far...
