Help with my HP Pavillion

May 22, 2005 9:31AM PDT

Hi... I have an HP Pavillion probably from 2000, this is what the computer says for specifications: HP Pavillion, GenuineIntel, x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 1 - 128 MB Ram, 20GB HArd drive, with CD RW
I'm running Window 98 Second Edition on it.
My mom recently sent me Windows XP which I would love to install because there will be a lot less problems. I've been trying to save all my files into CDs so that I can format the hard drive and install new windows. But for some reason my CD burner software won't work properly. I've tried Nero, Roxio, I've tried reinstalling them several times. The computer always freezes up whtn I try to run a program like that or Photoshop or anything more than Intenet Explorer. and sometimes even then it will freeze up. So, since I don't know how to trouble shoot a lot of stuff and I've already ran Ad-aware 6.0 and Norton but they are not finding everything I think. I thought a good idea would be to buy a new harddrive and install the new one as master and the old one as slave, that way I can install Windows XP on the new one, save the files from my old one by having it as a slave temporarily, but I don't know that you can do that with the machine I have, does anybody know or have any recommendations as to what to do? I REALLY NEED HELP, PLEASE!

Try these.

1. How long has it been since you removed the cover and dusted it out?

2. And hit the CPU heat sink with a blast from a compressed air can?

3. Did you try CDBurnerXP? It's not just for XP. See -> http://www.cdburnerxp.se/

Best of luck and download your HP drivers BEFORE you install XP.

Yeah it's been a long time and no, probably it's not well ventilated... maybe I should put a fan next to it Happy
You think that will fix my problems? I'll try those and no I didn't even know about that software I'll try that.... Oh, how do I download the HP drivers before I do Windows XP because I don't think I have any HP cds... not even for the printer... It's an HP too.

I head over to HP.com, collect the drivers and put them on a CDR before I start over. Why? Sometimes you lose your internet connection if this is your only machine.

Will such cure the machine?
