HELP WITH MY HOME NETWORK

Jul 28, 2004 1:10PM PDT

I'm trying to set up a network so that we can share files between our three computers. I set up a wired router in the middle of my house. I went from the modem directly into the router. From there, each computer connects into the router. We are all able to connect to the internet, but we can't share files. I tried the Home Networking Wizard, it set up a workgroup called "MSHOME". I thought the problem was fixed, but when i went on my dad's computer, it said that I did not have permission to access the workgroup. What should I do?

Donald,

Whenever posting questions on these forums, please give us as much information as possible about your computer. Depending on your issue, we might need the operating system, processor speed, amount of RAM installed, brand name of the computer, (if there is one), and any EXACT error messages you are receiving, and any other information you think might be helpful. The more information you give us, the better informed our answer will be.

The first thing that comes to mind is...do all of the computers have "Microsoft File and Printer Sharing" installed/enabled? And if so, are the "permissions" set on each computer so that ALL users have access?

On Windows 9.x, open the Control Panel, double click on the "Network" icon, then make sure that "File And Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks" is listed in the Network Components section. If it is, then click on the "File and Printer Sharing" button immediately below and make sure to place a CHECK mark in the appropriate box. If "File and Printer Sharing" isn't listed, then you'll need to add that particular "service".

On Win 2000/XP, open the Control Panel, double click on the "Network Connections/Network and Dial-up Connections" icon. When that loads, RIGHT click on the specific network connection icon that you are using, choose "Properties". When that loads, click on the "Networking" tab and verify that "File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks" is enabled and has a CHECK mark in the box next to it. If it's not, then you'll have to install it.

AFter that's all done, make sure you go to each computer, then RIGHT click on the folder or drive that you want to share, choose "Sharing", then set the parameters as you see fit. You may not want "Full Control" for each computer, or you may want to set up a password acces for the Win9.x machines. That's up to you.

Hope this helps.

Grif

when you went onto your dad's computer, what did you log in as? was it your dad's name or yours?, was it yours, if so you may have to go into the users passwords and allow access for your name on his computer. you would have to go in under his name and password and set your name up as a user on that system.

If you are running software firewalls(like Zonealarm)on your PCs you also must go into it on each computer and tell it what the ip address of each computer is, so that it will allow them into the computers. Your home network name will also have to be added to the Trusted zone of your network in there. Betageek
