When you move the cable from the PC to the router did you turn off the cable modem, move the cable from your PC to the WAN port of the router this power up the modem then the router?
If you didn't the modem may be locked onto your PC.

I have a surfboard SBG901 modem which I've used for about 2.5 years. Initially, I used it with a different computer which had Windows Vista, and I added a router for wireless service. No problems until about 1.5 years later when the computer died. Got a new computer with Windows 7, same router and modem. All worked well for a few months, then I was continually kicked off the internet every time I logged on. After a while I just stopped using the router and plugged directly into the modem. All works well the vast majority of the time, but of course I can't use any of my other devices in the house. I purchased a Belkin N750DB router and tried to hook it up, but no luck. I've had the computer checked out remotely and everything was fine, and the cable company says the signal is fine, so does anyone have any idea why I can't go wireless? Should I just buy a new modem? I looked on the motorola website and couldn't find anything helpful. I would appreciate any advice, even if it's "go buy a new modem." Thanks.
