Help with monitor's refresh rate! Can't see anything!

Apr 18, 2005 10:08AM PDT

Hi,

I have a Sony monitor. The display settings were messed with while I was away and now I can't even see the display settings window when I turn on my computer. It only shows a screen that says "Frequency Incorrect, 90hz/60hz" or something like that. I have tried to change the settings in safe mode but it won't allow me. Does anyone have any suggestions? The OS is Windows XP on an eMachine. Thanks a million!!

hmmm..

you have to drop the refresh below what ever it's max is,
max is (guessing) 85-87HZ, and it's at 90HZ

hmmm
how to fix this...safe mode should allow it...or you should be able to at least boot at a super low res (640x480 on most monitors will handle as high as 120hz...) and then change the refresh from there, down to 60hz
raise resolution
and then refresh rate

How to...

Hi,

How can I can change the res? When I start up in Safe Mode the only option I see and have in Display Properties>Settings>Screen Resolution is 800 x 600 pixels. Color quality is at Low and there are no more options. I have gone into Advanced but there are no options under Monitor>Monitor Settings.

Is new monitor in store?

System restore???

Did you see that option when going to Safe Mode? Just set it back to before you changed the resolution. In the worst case, you can remove the video driver and XP will redetect the device and reinstall or prompt you for the driver disk. This should not be a monitor problem. If you get it working, you should find a driver for the monitor. Sony does have these. A correct driver will know the maximum refresh rate it can use.

Try "System Restore" first

and driver removal as last choice. System Restore is an option you can run in safe mode. It will restore system settings to a time before you experienced your problem. Driver removal is not hard either and is often available in Add/Remove in the control panel if that's how it was installed in the first place. This just forces XP to use a basic VGA driver that will at least show you a screen while you reinstall the correct ones. Go for XP built in restore feature first.
