Question

Help with laptop

Jun 26, 2016 12:02PM PDT

So yesterday I decided to reset my laptop, do I could delete stuff I didn't mean to download and stuff, it told me it was going to take a little while for it all to delete and reset and stuff, so I waited. Came back later ( my display on my monitor on my laptop does not work, so I have to output it to a different display) and my screen on my laptop is on, but it's broken so I can't see anything, and the monitor I use isn't on, so i tested it with a different monitor, to see if that worked, no it didn't. So I preformed a hard reset on my laptop, still just didn't display anything to the monitor, and the laptop screen just kept flashing black every minute or so. So I removed the memory and put it back in and it didn't work still, please help.

Clarification Request
Is the laptop display "broken"?
Jun 26, 2016 12:15PM PDT

I've run into folk that use an external monitor as their laptop LCD is busted. They can get into a hole like this if they reset the laptop since the reset assumes the laptop and lcd is in good order.

The news is sort of bad as we must fix the broken parts.

The LCD screen is broken

That explains a lot.

You can try tapping the keys that clone the display but this is one of those common issues that if you hit my shop counter I respond "gonna need to fix that."

It might be pretty cheap to fix. How about the full make and model number?

Really??

Is that the problem though because the screen is broke but it flashes black every 15 or so seconds

I asked if the screen was broken.
Jun 26, 2016 12:51PM PDT

You said yes so I have to take your word on that. If the screen is not broken then we have to try to get to the BIOS screen (ask HP?) since that will work without Windows.

I apologize

I'm just worried spending money on something that may not need fixed but it is broken, I really don't know if something is wrong with something else,

Is there any way

Is there any way to get the screen to a monitor by using the keyboard?

- Collapse -
This varies by model.

And some models just don't when the laptop LCD is broken.

As you own this model you would know which FN + what key controls the displays or would check the manual.

But if the machine is in disrepair, all bets are off.

So did you test by getting to the BIOS?
Jun 26, 2016 1:16PM PDT

As to cost, the shop counter fee minimum here is 150 bucks plus parts. So for 50 bucks if the LCD was broken looks cheap to me.

Here's another test. Boot from some LiveOS CD/DVD/USB. I carry about 5 USD/DVD sticks and discs with me in my PC rescue kit. If you are into PC repair you need to get such things into your kit.

I really don't know what to do

When I can't fix my car.

Then I'm at the car repair shop. Here we've covered many angles and it appears you have reached the end of what you can do on your own.

I agree that asking folk that don't do this work often may feel out of their depth so maybe it's time for the repair counter?

After my last encounter with HP repair I no longer buy or bother to call them again. Long story at link.

I ran PC repair shops long ago so while I don't mind sharing my methods, I fear we have reached the end.

if you have disk
Jun 26, 2016 12:29PM PDT

if you have a win8 disk from any computer, you can try booting to it and do a repair. you can also try doing a system restore and return to a restore point to a date prior to the problems.

If neither works, I foresee a os installation in your future.

Answer
By default...

The laptop bios by default always goes to int. monitor(LCD) as that would be typical and of course it has to be working. If you changed that and use an ext. monitor you need the working int. LCD in order to make the change. However, if the int. LCD becomes damaged you're in a "catch-22" situation and really what can you do but fix the LCD. As far as I know, you're not going to change that unless you reprogram the bios and that isn't in the works for practically anyone but a real techie or factory people. So fix the laptop's LCD and then hope its the LCD itself an not the supporting electronics.
