i have similar problem.have a windows XP system which
has been operational several years. no additions of hardware or programs. it began to develop intermittent
crashes requiring memory dump. tried re-installing all drivers i could think of with no success. two days ago,
noticed that the dvd rom was not recognized in my computer.after un-installing and re-installing, i
tried running windows XP to repair windows.
but the installation interrupted with error message
asking for asms file. tried an edit of registry following instructions in microsoft support but without
success. bought an external disk enclosure and was able
to save my documents files and reformat the disk. will
now attempt to re-install windows XP but i still wonder
whether the problem will be hardware based, in the motherboard or ram memory.
any help would be appreciated
I'm having a reoccurring issue with my dvdrw drive disappearing. I've searched high and low and i've come across a couple issues that are close but nothing as of yet has helped. I've swapped out the cdrom with another one to see if it's the drive, but it does it with a typical non burning cdrom as well so i'm fairly sure it's not hardware related. The only way i can get the drive to show up again is to shut down and switch from the dvdrw drive to another cdrom and restart...at which time THAT drive shows up. I can't seem to narrow it down to any certain cause. The drive completely disappears...it's not anywhere in device manager...it's basically as if the drive is unplugged. In fact, the only error of any kind that i can find is in the system events list, there is a Plug And Play error stating that the drive was removed from the system without following proper P+P steps.
The system specs are as follows:
Windows XP/Media Center Edition
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 (2.13ghz each core)
Nvidia Gefore 7600GS 256mb
2gb DDR2
This PC was purchased late in '06 and has very little use (i bought it from a friend who was computer illiterate and hardly touched it).
Anyone have any ideas?
