HELP with buying a home theater system

Nov 27, 2005 8:03AM PST

Hi, I am trying to buy a home theater (preferably in a box!) system for my fiance, but am running into a lot of technical issues in terms of what might work best in our audio room. The problem is that our TV (a regular old Toshiba) is in the family room which opens at the back into the kitchen. Plus, we have hardwood floors making wiring to side speakers tough (the left side being open and having a large opening into the living room). I thought about wireless, but we already have a home network utilizing the 2.4 ghz frequency. Then, I thought about virtual surround sound (eg, Yamaha YSP-1 or Niro 1.1 Pro II), but on further reading realized this might not work, given that the entire right wall is glass sliding doors (which will eventually have blinds/curtains in front of them) and the left, as I said, has a large opening from the TV to about 1/3 to 1/2 of the way back. I thought maybe the best option would be a 5.1 system and having to just bite the bullet and have some exposed wiring (although we will also have a large area rug at some point - we just moved in) from the receiver under/on top of the TV, to the side speakers slightly behind the couch and using upright floor speakers...is that the only option?????? Thanks for your help!!
