Help with AVG Aftershock.

Dec 6, 2010 4:55PM PST

So after dealing with the "unpleasant" result of the AVG restart, I only got it to work by renaming some AVG files as .bak. However, now that it is booting again, I keep getting the "AVG needs a restart" window, even after I do it, it comes up right after - repeatedly. I am not able to uninstall AVG, but it will not correct itself - I can only assume that renaming files has messed it up. Any solutions? Windows 7, Asus U43J, 64bit.
Thanks

Hello New2this2011,

the best procedure will be following of these steps to completely reinstall AVG 2011 on your computer (make sure all AVG folders are removed).

Then check the situation again. What is the current situation?

Note: as you are using Asus notebook, have you installed ASUS Data Security Management application? According to some reports, this application can cause freeze of AVG installation (not induced in our environment).

Thank you

Thanks Ondrej! I tried to uninstall and got error messages each time. I tried to repair and got the same error. I even tried to remove every AVG file and folder on my computer manually, but it will not allow me to remove the AVG10 folder in the Program Files (x86) because it says it is in use with AVG Watchdog. I keep going to task mgr and stopping the service but it keeps running again.
I have not installed anything ASUS other what came pre-installed, so I don't believe I have ASUS DSM.
Update...after a full shutdown overnight, it allowed the AVGWD service to stay stopped, so it allowed me to remove the AVG folder, so I will try a full reinstall again right now and let you know.

Okay, I got the same error message again when trying the installation program. It will only offer me the repair, remove or add additional features options, and it still has my serial number on the next screen, so I know I still have shrapnel somewhere..I just can't find it.
The error I get is:
Severity: Error
Error Code: 0xc0070643
General Internal Error
Problems with windows installer package
Program required for this install to complete could not be run
Context: AVG Product Installation

Thanks to all who helped with suggestions. I followed all the directions - used the remove tool, used the ccleaner and the new AVG installer worked perfectly.
Thanks again!
