Resolved Question

Help with a windows 8.1 To restore a system image.

May 6, 2015 3:17AM PDT

My specs are a asus p7p55 ws supercomputer with a lynnfield I5 one Intel 120 gb solid state boot drive (The one I need to restore) with a fresh 8.1 install on it and a 1 2tb hard drive with data stil on it from my old system before it crashed. Also I have a 320gb hard drive with Linux on it that doesn't show up in windows so I don't think that is part of the problem. I also have an external 1tb hard drive with two system images on it one of the 120gb solid state and one of the 2tb hard drive. This is a western digital my passport essential I believe. Ok now the problem I'm having is when I try to restore my system image on the install disc my external hard drive does not show up at all at this point. I'm hoping that I have to install some driver for this hard drive to be able to get read but I'm not sure it could be something else. Any help would be greatly appreciated because I don't want to loss all my files.

About loss.

Remove the drive you need to keep from being wiped from the work area. Now that's safe.

You didn't reveal what software you used to backup so I can't comment if there's a problem here such as you need to use the USB 2.0 port or such.

Also, the Asus should have let you create a restore DVD or USB so I'd use that instead.

Backup software

Sorry I had trouble in my browser. Ok I am using the backup software built into windows that's in the control panel then in file history. It's called system image backup.

Try it on some USB 2.0 port.

And for everyone's sake, stop using Microsoft's backup system. It's been hit and miss for decades. Why folk think it will work when needed is a mystery.

reinstall the windows

then from inside it, do the backup. That's the usual manner of windows backups. You'd have been better off using something like Easus Todo, which wouldn't or shouldn't require that extra step of installing windows first.
