help with a VAIO sr-33

by rwbailey / May 2, 2004 3:16 PM PDT

Hi all, I have a Vaio I bought from a friend. It was completely formated, nothing but dos. I planned to install windows, but even with the drivers it refuses to run the cd-rom. The drive in question is external and runs from the pci card. it should be drive E:\ but it cant find it. I rand smartdrv and it reads a,c,d. D being the second hard drive. I have tried different sets of drivers and can't make it work. Any Ideas? I would like to fix this myself rather paying a shop to do it.

Thanks. Robert.

Sony has been "bad" about providing drivers for such things. You'll want the bundled restore CDs. Period.

They don't offer much in the way of drivers for such on their web site, but if you don't find it, then taking it to the shops is likely to cost you time and money but not fix it.

If you really want it to work, get the restore CDs.

If you feel slighted by this, take your ire to Sony after you get your CD set.

The problem with the restore cds is that the cd-rom doesn't run right now. I have the drivers I need on C drive, and the cd is getting power but it won't admit there is a drive there. Since it won't read the cd-rom I couldn't use the recover disks even if I had them.

Drivers don't fix hardware.

If I read your post, I read that the CDROM is defective or is not a Sony component (you didn't write such.)

To reload some of the Sony's we had to fix the CDROM unit, then it's BIOS could boot the restore CD from that unit.

Of course, if you don't have all the right parts, or broken parts, what direction is left?

Try this ->

In closing, maybe this is just a bad deal going sore. Can you return it and go get something nicer?

Good luck with your installation. I feel your pain since I had a similar case before.

I once needed to install XP on my z505le's formatted hard drive. I never figured out how to configure the computer to read my pci-card cd-rom. Turned out I had to take the hard drive out of my laptop and installed XP indirectly from desktop. It literally took me two weeks to install XP. It was a nightmare!!!! I will never buy a laptop without an internal cd-rom unless BIO allows it to boot from USB or PCI-card slot.
