Help! wireless internet in car or boat? ie, away from home?

by blue13 / June 30, 2004 2:28 AM PDT

Help! I'm new to wireless internet, and not tech saavy. Have a laptop. Need options to get wireless internet access while travelling, BUT at location w/ NO "hardline" connection like a modem, cable or satellite dish.

Specifically -- driving in a car on a road trip or staying on a houseboat on a lake.
I saw cell phone providers have cards, but you have to be close to their towers and moreso pay a LOT (like $175-$300) just for the card PLUS abt $80 a mo. service! I'm not likely to use it very often, so hoping for inexpens. options. Or maybe from a satellite co. rather than a cell co? Thanks to all!

There's a similar post which I'll copy my answer here.

"In the past we had Richochet (modems) and in some places you can pick up WiFi such as a local bookstore for free.

In the future we have WiMax, but all this takes time unless you are lucky to have the Richochet up in your area.
