**Help, Windows XP Pro won't install USB Infrared Adapter**

May 28, 2005 2:48PM PDT

hello,
I have just purchased a 'U2IrDA Mini' USB-Infrared Adapter in order to be able to connect my Sony Ericsson Cell phone to my computer and transfer files. As i purchased the dongle from a private buyer it did not come with any drivers, however i went to the manufacturer of the chip (STIR4200) inside the dongle - Sigmatel Electronics, www.sigmatel.com and downloaded the lastest driver, Version 1.32.

I then proceeded as per the instructions on the website, i unzipped the files and ran the setup program which installed files into the C:Windows directory. When this setup program had finished it instructed me to then insert the dongle into the USB port and the operating system should finish the installation.

I then inserted the dongle and windows recognised a 'USB Serial Controller' and asked me to either search for drivers automatically or specify a location. I have tried both ways because apparently windows is supposed to have a version of the driver but this did not work.

I then tried to specify a location of the driver from the files that i downloaded from the sigmatel website but it could not find any information about the drive. I have tried other older versions of the driver but it will not recognise the drivers and it just sits in the device manager with a yellow question mark because it has no drivers installed for it.

Can anyone please help me with this problem? I have been searching for some suitable drivers but have been unable to find any and i have had no reply from sigmatel either. I am also running Windows XP Professional with SP2 if that helps at all. Any help is much appreciated, Cheers Benny

**Help, Windows XP Pro won't install USB Infrared Adapter**
May 29, 2005 11:14PM PDT

Benny:

Try the driver from one of the following sites:

http://www.usbgear.com/USB_IrWand/

http://www.sigmatel.com/products/tech-support.htm#ir-support

Unzip the files to a separate folder that you can find easily during the installation.

Open the device manager and find the USB device with the Yellow exclamation mark and select "Update Driver".

Then force the driver installation by browsing to the folder that contains the files you just unzipped. You should find an "inf" file to install. Install it and see if it works for your device. Ignore any warning that the device is not "signed".

USB Infra-red still will not work
May 30, 2005 5:46PM PDT

Hello,
Thanks for the advice jim but i still cannot get it to work. I tried both sets of drivers from the websites you posted below. I downloaded the zip files and extracted them to a new folder i had placed on the desktop. I ran the setup program and the drivers are unsigned so i clicked 'continue anyway' and when it says insert the device to finish installation. I then insert the dongle into the usb port and i specify the the exact folder of the XP driver and click next it searched but just does exactly what it was doing before coming up with the message -
'The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software'. Even thought i specify the exact folder and tell it not to look anywhere else it just continually does this and the device unusable without drivers. Thanks for the suggestion and any other help or suggestions are much appreciated, Cheer Benny

Benny:

Try the driver referenced at this link.
It definitely references the Sigmatel 4200 chip.

If you cannot get it to work, there may be another problem. See if you can get another machine to recognize and install the device and then look up the driver details in the Device Manager on that machine and make certain the files are located on the problem machine before attempting to reinstall it.

USB dongle tried on other computers
May 31, 2005 12:03PM PDT

hello jim,
yes i have tried those drivers from that particular website you mentioned but they also will not install the dongle on my computer. I have also tried to install the dongle on another computer running Windows XP Pro and it does the same thing. I then tried to on a computer running Windows 98 and it also would not install properly. I'm really not sure what could be wrong. Once again thanks for the help, Cheers Benny

addendum...
May 31, 2005 2:10PM PDT
I then inserted the dongle and windows recognised a 'USB Serial Controller' and asked me to either search for drivers automatically or specify a location. I have tried both ways because apparently windows is supposed to have a version of the driver but this did not work.

It seems that the driver has not been installed properly, or the wrong driver has been installed. Normally, if you have run setup for the driver, you will not be asked for the location of the driver. The system will just look for it at the fefault location and install the device. Also, make sure you have the correct driver specific for your OS. The label inside the device may not be correct....Are you sure you have run the correct setup file ? Someimes, the unzippd file contains more than one file named "setup". Tying to help.

Have tried these methods, but still no sucess
May 31, 2005 4:13PM PDT

hello Papa Echo,
I'm almost starting to think that I have been sold a dud USB IR Dongle. The file that i downloaded direct from the manufacturer's website contains only one file. I did read the FAQ on the website before i did the install as well and i followed these instructions carefully. I ran the setup program and i left the install to the default location C:Windows\USB-IR, I have also tried just intsalling it in C:Program Files but this did not make any difference either.

As i posted in my first message once the setup program had completed the setup program said to click finish and then insert the dongle into the USB port and the operating system will finish installation. Everytime i do this it recognises ''USB Serial Controller' but no drivers will work with this device. I even tried it on another Windows ME computer today and that would not work. I have even tried uninstalling and reinstalling numerous times, but still nothing seems to work.

Either I have been sold a dud device or the drivers supplied by the manufacturer are absolute rubbish and don't work. Cheers for the help, Benny

correction with above post

hello,
In the second line of my previous post I meant to say that the file I donloaded from the manufacturer's website contained only 1 'setup file'.

Don't give up just yet.

Still more things to try:

? Perform disk cleanup, especially for Temp files.
? In Safe Mode, go to Device Manager and remove every instance of the Ir device, if present.
? Try to update the drivers of the USB controllers.
? Run your anti-virus and anti parasite programs.
? Run the downloaded setup file again, reboot, and insert the Ir device to different USB ports.
? Try to install manually at control Panel>Add Hardware, where you can choose the manufacturer- if you are lucky, yiou may be able to find the device listed.

I note that you have already tried to install the device to other computers running other operating systems. It did not work because a driver for the specific OS may be required. Try to get the specific driver and see whether the device installs. Have you tried to get the driver from the seller (probably on a floppy) ? Does it require a driver ? If it is a fairly new model, it may not require a XP driver.

still no success
Jun 1, 2005 5:05PM PDT

hello papa echo,
I have tried all the things that you listed in your previous post but still no success. A person who i spoke to who works in a computer shop and also has an USB IR adapter to transfer things to and from their phone said the phone's software must be installed for the dongle to be recognised. I had already done this but i went back and unistalled and did a fresh install of the phone software to make sure there are no problems there. I have sent off another couple of e-mails to the manufacturer so hopefully i will get some kind of response soon.

Also when i was trying to install the dongle on other computers, if I was working on a computer with a different operating system i made sure that i used the specified software that corresponded with the opertaing system, so that can't be part of the problem.

Once again thanks for the suggestions, I'm really anxious to get this problem worked out. Cheers Benny

Saga Of The Unrecognized Ir Dongle....

...said the phone's software must be installed for the dongle to be recognised.

Not necessarily so. He would be correct if he said that the phone's software must be installed first for the phone to be recognized.

Good luck on your continued quest for help at the manufacturer. Do post back to report how it goes.

Device install

Something to try...

Once again un-install all software and drivers.

On re-install Do not use up-dated drivers. Don't remember the exact wording but you want to use another driver.

May or may not work. I've had to use this work around when replacing modems of the same mnf or chip set.
