Help - Windows critical updates have screwed up my computer

by casique / July 10, 2004 11:44 AM PDT

Hi folks - please forgive if I'm posting in/on the wrong forum

I'm running Win 98 SE

To make a long story short - last night I was downloading the recommended updates off the microsoft site - I took all the updates they recommended for IE6 and win98

Now, the fonts on all my browsers are all screwed up - espeicially IE6 but also Netscape - so I'm guessing it has somehting to do with Win98

how are they screwed up you ask? well it seems to be mostly menu items and buttons - the top menu bar on this page and the code buttons above what I'm writing are all barely legible

Can anyone suggest how i might try to fix this problem?

Actually, I take that back - this page all looks fine (another board I posted this on was all messed up)

But generally text in menu bars all looks sort of like a messy dot matrix printer

any help would really be appreciated

The CU's messed with my font settings and folder view settings which I have spent hours setting up individually.

Who knows why...

I may be wrong but I don't believe that Windows Critical Updates would do what you are discribing. I also use W98SE and have every single update for both Windows & IE6. None of these updates have caused any problems ... nor should they.

Though I do not know what has caused the problems, I would suggest you use Ad-Aware plus Spybot-Search & Destroy to check for malware programs that may be causing the problems. If these find nothing, also try CWShredder.

Hopefully, you are already using up-to-date anti-virus program and a firewall.

I hope this helps you resolve your problems. If not, maybe someone more knowledgable will add to this post.
