Help! Windows 10 System Restore is not working for me.

Apr 20, 2018 4:05PM PDT

I have been running Windows 10 since it was launched, and have installed every update released. However, since the beginning, I have found that System Restore does not work. There have been suggestions from MS that there is a corrupted file in the registry and I should reinstall Windows. This I did; it made no difference. I wrote to the problem page of a magazine and they suggested that my AV Program, McAfee may be responsible, so I should disable it try to use System Restore and re-enable it again. This did not work either.
Does anyone have any idea about this issue? I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Win 10 updates delete all restore points
Apr 29, 2018 2:35AM PDT

In windows 10 updates I have noticed they delete all your restore points and also turn off the drive to do a restore point. This is just so annoying as I have checked many a PC and they all seem to have this problem. Therefore no going back to a restore point was possible.

It pays to do restore points yourself frequently or whenever an update has been done to check that it has DONE a restore point.

Alternative way to back out update if restore points gone
Apr 29, 2018 11:31AM PDT

You are so right!
And if the update itself needs backing out:
Settings > View installed update history > Uninstall updates

Try Safe Mode
Apr 29, 2018 4:40PM PDT

The only way I have been able to use Windows 10 System Restore successfully is in Safe Mode. It has worked that way every time. If I use it normally, It always fails, rolls back and tells me that nothing was changed.

Try disabling everything in the start up and then do a system restore in safe mode

Win10 was No Good for me.
Apr 30, 2018 7:55PM PDT

I tried WIN10 but it did not take too long for me to decide it was not for me. See'in as how I have a WIN8.1 DVD I merely reloaded my laptop and moved on. Sorry, Gerry, I am not posting this to make you feel bad. I just could not bring myself to horse around with WIN10 after I had trouble with it so I just blew it off!

Randy.

With reference to already told methods.

Why don't you just read suggestions! Im sorry, I don't want to offend, but I have already referred to other GREAT replies, you have missed!
Go to "System Protection" then "Configure", "Turn on System Protection" if not ON!
Set "Max Usage", say 5%
"OK"
In System Protection, "CREATE", Bingo! if none of them above works:
Run CHKDSK, SFC.... (as others gave reference to HOW.)

Then Enjoy your 90% useless Sys Restore, which you realise ONLY when you wish to use it in need.
So, if you wish SAFE "restore" , use imaging as been told by others as well.

Have a nice day.

One Thing to Watch
May 1, 2018 1:04AM PDT

When you go to the System Resore part of System Properties and try to use a previous restore point, many will notice that a lot (??) of restore points seem to be missing. I just want to point out, in case someone missed it, that there is a checkbox that is labelled "Show More Restore Points" (OK, its late -- might say something similar). If you check the box, more restore points might appear. This is just to help in case people think some restore points may have disappeared on them.

restoring system restore
May 3, 2018 5:58AM PDT

I had the same issue with my one of my Win10 Home PCS, no issue with the Win10Pro PC. Both are 64 bit

The issue is that the file, system32\rstrui.exe missing. I did a full scan with my Avast Home security but not malware was found.
I tried all sorts of suggestions from numerous "tech"blogs, as well as microsoft support post with no success.
I even copied the missing file from my other Win10 Home 64 bit PC but it would not work.
A few days ago, I decided to manually DL and install the new version of Win10, the "spring update 1803.
After the installation was completed, I made sure to check the box to enable system restore. The following day, my system restore was back.

Perhaps upgrading the OS from version 1709 to 1803 did the trick.
Microsoft is in the process of rolling out 1803 now. After you have upgraded, maybe you'll have system restore back.
