Help! why cable and not dsl?

Mar 14, 2009 1:25AM PDT

I was all set to work at home getting another phone line added and a dsl box. My company said that i had to have a cable line and that i couldn't use dsl. I can't get cable where i live and when i spoke with a comcast technical person they said there was no reason why dsl wouldn't work with my computer and the applications that i would be using on my system. I would be on the phone taking claims through my laptop and even the tech people at work don't understand saying they have other employees that use dsl. I don't understand why i can't use dsl just like the tech at comcast said the phone company would just have to open the vpn port and i shouldn't have any problems. i just wonder because my company has to see what i am doing on the computer for quality purposes and the comcast tech that would be even easier with dsl. they think that maybe my company has an account through comcast cable in which they would be billed directly and thinks that is mostly likely the reason and he cant see why i cant pay for it and get reimbursed. this has really upset me and i know i should just be happy to have a job and work at their location, but i was really looking forward to this and have all my equipment at home to use. i was going to try and hook up with my home dsl box and see how fast my dsl would be. i guess i would have to contact my phone company and ask them to open the vpn port so the phone can be used through my computer. I probably haven't given you all the information you need, but i can if you just tell me what you might need, i am not an expert when it comes to computers. i am just really determined to try and find out why i cant use the dsl. Please help me!

My second thought . . .

(the first was that I have to work today and that sucks) is that whomever at your job is not very informed. Surely some IT person knows everything? Maybe they're just stating a general requirement that you need a high speed connection. And the IT person or whomever doesn't know about DSL.

I go with Bob's suggestion. Trust us, they'll never know it. BTW, this computer is yours, right?

actually it is their laptop

I already had the equipment at home. They set the laptop up with all the applications that i needed to take claims over the phone. I would be using avaya for the phone portion. it doesn't have an actual phone, since the calls are routed through the computer. I would have to say if i logged on they would know it. I don't believe there is anything lacking in the dsl. I honestly think since the program had started the person setting up the cable and phone companies to come out and install was told you have to have a cable line, so when mgmt was told, they just wouldn't question it, because it is all new to our office as far as the home shoring is concerned. they have 2 other offices with about 12 people that are doing the home shoring. I hate to be confrontational with my manager, but tomorrow i am going to ask her why they are telling her that you must have cable, when the comcast technician said this was untrue, and hopefully she will let me speak with the person setting up all this and ask her what the reason is behind the cable. I just wish i had some concrete evidence to prove to them that this is untrue. I guess if they try to say that the dsl wouldn't be fast enough i can ask them to let me try before returning the equipment back, otherwise i'll be doomed because comcast has no future plans to bring it out to where i live. i guess i have nothing to lose, but again i just hate to confront people if i don't have the proof, again it's very frustrating because i lost my other position at work in another dept because they sent my job duties overseas to india, and now i had this opportunity to work at home. i wouldn't think my boss would be mad at me for asking since i did tell her if and when cable would get out my way would i still be able to go home and work and she said sure. I again feel this is some kind of billing or politic issue. i wondered if it had to do with the ip address thing, but then it couldn't be because the computer is already configured and ready to go. Anymore help as far any technical issues that would prevent me from using dsl would help greatly. I just need some ammunition to confront this person who sets up the damn installs, if i contact her and she gives a reason (technically that is on why i have to have cable) otherwise i am going to have to confront my boss and say that the answer is not good enough and i just don't know what to expect. you are probably right on the person not being very informed it's just saying to my boss he y guess what i found out from the it person at comcast cable and then hearing her answer, i guess i am just afraid of what she will say. at least she did say she appreciated my tenacity maybe i just need a good approach speech.

OP:

You need to break up your posts into several paragraphs, it makes for easier reading. That second post of yours is too long.

Homebound won't be for me

Thanks to all the responses I received. I did find out that our phone system Genesys is the problem with DSL users. When they tested it with the first office home users had dsl and the calls were getting dropped all the time. Problem has been answered, but no resolution. I went to the user forum and Genesys and posted a message asking if anyone had reported these such problems with their software. It won't get me home any faster, but it doesn't hurt to ask.
