help! which apple for everything and little editing?

Feb 1, 2005 4:20AM PST

here's my problem and a little background.

i'm a film student who has a sony dcr 105 mini dv. now, i have a home computor shared with my family members and it always crashs hence i need a laptop for

1) uploading my stuff which includes many Word, powerpoint and excel documents, music, hopefully some videos( i know that their files might be too big).
2)i'm leaving my home soon to the USA hence i need a seperate PC
3) i always wanted a 'editing suite' but my home pc is not capable to handle the memory needed.

basically, i need a portable pc that allows me to go about my usual web sufing (mail, reading), the usual paperwork on word/powerpoint/excel and upload my videos via firewire and do a little editing.

i've done some research on the powerbooks (except the 17 inch cos it's way overbugdet) and the ibooks, however i'm a little torn. which is better for me? what i would want is somthing that has lots of memory ( i could save the bigger files on a external portable hard drive can i?) superdrive and the usual word/power...etc.

i heard that the powerbook is good for editing but i am not a hardcore editer and my bugdet is around 1500usd. that is very tough it means i can only afford the powerbook 12 just barely without the extra software. say if i push the bugdet to 2000usd, what are my options? i'm alright with the 12 or 15 or 14 inch display.

thank you...
