Help! What should I do?

Sep 6, 2005 1:40AM PDT

My subscription to McAfee just expired and in doing research found that there are a number of comparable programs out there. I own a Dell 1600. Does it make sense to renew the subscription (i am definitely a newbie) or try to go through what Linda had to go through? I was thinking of switching to Norton for no other reason than because I read some favorable reviews, I also saw a program on CNET called PC Shield that got awesome reviews. I am nervous though about how to properly uninstall McAfee so that whatever program I install doesn't conflict... Honest responses please...

Personally, I would uninstall Mcafee and get AVG antivirus for FREE. It is very good and not a resorce hog like Mcafee and Norton. Here is the link.

Cyber, It's Your Choice..

Do you like the program you've been using and if so, is it worth the subscription price to you? If it ain't broke, then why fix it? (Just for general information here, please tell us the version of Windows you are using and the version of McAfee Virus Scan you're using. For McAfee, RIGHT click on the McAfee shield, or the red "M" in the lower right corner, then give us the version/build number plus the scan engine and virus definitions you're using.)

There are some excellent antivirus programs available, some of them are free, and that is one option..But if you are familiar with your current program and like it, consider carefully whether to switch. Check the internet for reviews about all the products.

In regards to uninstalling, if you choose to try something else, BE SURE to uninstall you McAfee program. I can give you the McAfee uninstall instructions as soon as I know the version you are using.

Hope this helps.

I've been using McAfee's anti-virus subscription service for 5 yrs. and haven't had one virus sneak through yet. I really like the automatic updates which most of the others don't have. I also believe there has to be a 'comfort value' when using any service and McAfee gives that to me. Now, if only McAfee can see their way to make their website work with Firefox...

Jack, As To Using Firefox To Update McAfee...

Grif, thanks...

for the plugin. Just ran it. I use the two browsers pretty much like you do. I like using Firefox because the personal info file isn't the same as IE. It's safer to do business that way. I get McAfee updates just fine. It's when I go to their site I have had problems. I'm now in the habit to right to IE before going to McAfee. Regards.

and life goes on...

Thanks Grif, I think I'll do just that, keep McAfee, as JackinTuscon was saying i haven't had a problem so far. And trying to go into the uninstall being a newbie would probably do me more harm than good. Decision made, I'll stay with McAfee, why did u give that site to Jack--something about Firefox? Can I use that as well to update my McAfee? Lemme know...everyone who answered my questions, thanks a bunch!!!!

Cyber, About Updating McAfee
Sep 7, 2005 12:31AM PDT

Generally, the newer online versions of McAfee update "better" if Internet Explorer is left as the default browser. Virus Scan uses Internet Explorer to connect to the internet and update the virus definitions, etc. The general system requirements for Virus Scan recommend leaving IE as the default...BUT...many users prefer Firefox as a default browser and some have experienced problems using it to run the automatic updater..The plugin I suggested to Jack "usually" fixes the problem for users that want Firefox as their default browser.

In my case, because I use both Internet Explorer and Firefox for different purposes, I leave IE as the default but place a Firefox shortcut on the desktop. Depending on what I'm going to do on the internet, I open the browser of my choice by using the desktop shortcut. If I'm doing some internet surfing or visiting forums such as this, I use Firefox. If I'm going to the Windows Update site or Microsoft sites of any type, I use Internet Explorer.

Hope this helps.

Need more help!!!

I for whatever reason am getting a different cost when I try to automatically update versus going to the dell website. It says that the Security Center which I have is 69.99 but when i go to put that in my cart it goes to 119.99 instead...where can i go to download the McAfee for 69.99 or go to a store where they are selling the center for that cost? Help...the McAfee website is kinda confusing...

Cyber, In Addition To Tufenuf's Suggestion...
Sep 8, 2005 3:16AM PDT

...it's very possible that you're going to need to turn in a rebate form.

By the way, you mentioned "Security Center"...The Security Center portion of McAfee is only a part of the program...I'm guessing you have the "Internet Security Suite" which comes with Security Center, Virus Scan, McAfee Firewall, and a few other things...You may, or may not want all that stuff. Even at the McAfee site, you can buy Virus Scan alone for only $39.99, or the entire Security Suite for $59.99 for the downloadable installer..See the link below:

Internet Security Suite

McAfee Virus Scan
http://us.mcafee.com/root/package.asp?pkgid=100&cid=9901

Still, those prices are REALLY EXPENSIVE. I'd watch the advertisements in the local papers...I've seen these same items for almost nothing (many times they're FREE) at local retailers like "CompUSA", "Office Depot", "Staples", "Circuit City", "Best Buy", etc.

Hope this helps.
