Help! What's a Privacy Protection install?

Nov 6, 2011 6:45PM PST

I was on imdb and I was suddenly disconnected off the Internet and my computer gave an error message that says I have to dl/install Privacy Protection because it found a "worm" on my laptop. I clicked on this thing and it wanted me to purchase it.

I tried to reconnect using firefox but it gave some sort of b-s that I couldn't. I tried to reconnect using explorer but it gave the exact same answer. And now my stuff on my lappy don't work right. Please help.

Windows XP Pro
Sony Vaio

What is Privacy Protection?
Nov 6, 2011 9:12PM PST

faith...

Privacy Protection is a rogue anti-spyware program. The below removal guide should help. Follow ALL the directions. If you see any ads, ignore them. Scroll down to where you see, "Automated Removal Instructions for Privacy Protection using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware": Continue on from there.

"Remove Privacy Protection (Uninstall Guide)"

You might want to check to see if the malware changed your settings to use a proxy server:

Open Internet Explorer. Go to Tools>Internet Options>Connections Tab. Click on the "LAN Settings" button. If there is a check in the box "Use a proxy server for your LAN", uncheck it. Click "OK". Then "OK", again.

Open Firefox. Go to Tools>Options>Advanced. Click on the "Network" tab. To the right of where you see ""Configure how Firefox connects to the Internet", click on the "Settings" button. Put a tick mark next to "No proxy". Click "OK". Then "OK", again.

If you run into any problems along the way, please do not hesitate to post back and let us know.

Best of luck..
Carol

Omg...no!
Nov 7, 2011 1:57PM PST

My poor lappy can't even get past the login screen! I feel like I'm going to cry! As soon as I turn it on I pressed on F8 and go to Safe Mode with networking and then Windows pops up prompting me to log in. I'd love to login but I don't even have a way to click on anything. Mouse pad doesn't work, tabbing over doesn't work and it isn't reading anything! I'm so frustrated. Please help me.

Hi...
Nov 8, 2011 6:56AM PST

I was so upset about not even having a mouse that I just wiped my hard drive and installed my bf's windows 7 OS. Now I've lost everything I had in there including XP Pro! I loved my XP pro. I had to reinstall a ton of updates and I finally have the ability to get online. I've been using my iPhone to post here. Thank you for taking the time.

I guess in the end I couldn't save my Vaio from that Privacy Protection virus. Sad

Is this a bad time to mention the "B" word?
Nov 8, 2011 8:24AM PST

faithherrr..

Sounds like you've had one busy day!

By the word "B" word, I had "backup" in mind. Or am I ... "pouring salt on an open wound"? Sad

I presume when you say you "lost everything you had", it included some important files. If that is the case, now might be a good time to consider making a habit of backing up, that which you can't afford to lose. I shall say no more.

Good luck with Windows 7. You'll get used to it in no time!
