HELP: Web Question?

Jul 1, 2005 2:20AM PDT

I've created multiple personal sites for myself over the past few years, and just recently, a friend of mine has asked me to create one for her. How much should I charge for my time to create it as well as my time to maintain it since she's not web or design savvy? Has anyone been in this situation before where they're just starting out and have no idea what to charge people? If anyone could get back to me on this, I'd really appreciate it!

As an amatuer like yourself, I don't think you could put a price on helping someone else develop a personal site. When I started out I received a lot of help from those more knowledeable than I, at no cost.
I think the joy should be in starting a site and assisting the other party to improve on it.
Sorry if this is not the reply you were looking for.

Helping a friend is just that.

If you are considering going professional, that is when you have to consider how much you are going to charge your customers. But I wouldn't necessarily consider a friend as a customer unless you were already in the business.

I have been in this same situation. Charging friends and family is not always a good idea especially if you have not charged others for the same service. I have not charged for the time it takes to create or maintain, but for the domain name(s) and hosting you may want to either pass a portion of your hosting fees on to them or encourage them to sign up for their own account. If you decide to start your own business at this, being a reseller is a great way to make a residual income.
