HELP! unable to install applications, windows xp pro

when I try to install an application or update, I get error message " unable to complete installation... windows installer cannot be accessed...etc'. what am I doing wrong?

There's a well discussed issue with those .NET updates that fail like that. You did nothing wrong. The maker of the OS seems to not get the message that folk are tired of working around that issue.

how can I work around this issue?
it prevents me from installing applications and updates.

Uninstall all .NET versions.

Reboot and install them again. If that fails, research "NET CLEANUP UTILITY."

Again you did nothing wrong and there are many thousands of posts about this one.

I think you didn't enter right activation key or at the time of installation you press any button which may create problem in installation.
