Help transfering 1 program with its filesto another computer

Aug 26, 2007 1:31AM PDT

Hello!
I'm new to this forum and I need some clarification. I want to transfer a veterinary from a computer (Windows XP) to another with XP. The program has customer information files in it.

How do I copy the program (with files) and load it into the other computer?

Many thanks,
liquiddesert

Two things to do.

1. Install the program on the new computer.
2. Restore the (backup) data from the old computer on the new computer, just like you would do it on the old one.

This assumes the veterinary DOES regularly make a backup of his data. If not, that can mean only two things:
a. He isn't interested in his data, so there's no need to transfer them.
b. He better start reading the manual that came with the software about what to backup. And he's quite lucky he didn't yet lose them.

Hope this helps.

Can't

The data for the program shouldn't be overly difficult, it's moving the program itself. That hasn't really been possible since Windows95 arrived on the scene.

Install the program on the new computer, then figure out where it stores all its data on the old computer, and copy it to the same place on the new computer.

Can't help you with the specifics, because I'm all but certain I will have never heard of the program if you mentioned its name.

Thanks for the replies!
I'm assuming I can copy to a CD-RW and load them into the new computer?

Thanks again!

Yup.

However, be sure you know what to do with the 'read only' attribute of the files. Or you'll get an interesting error message.

OK, what do I do IF I get a "read only"?

(NT) Uncheck the read-only attribute in the file properties.
