HELP! TOO MANY APP RUNNING

Any advise? Please help my home version of xp seems to be hosed. Running very slow, very very slow.
Cpu running close to or at 100% 70-80 applications running. Dell sending new xp sw to reload, but im thinking/hoping may be a better way to restore it back to "normal" Really dont do alot on this pc. music, email etc nothing special.

Any advise would be appreciated.

you didnt say what virus program soft ware etc.
