Help to replace hard disk and system files on HP6735S

Sep 1, 2012 5:54AM PDT

The hard disk on my son's computer died. We bought a new one and fitted it. When we switch on it says "non-system disk or disk error. Replace and strike any key when ready". It does this whether the CD drive is empty or contains the original HP "Application and Driver Recovery DVD". What should we be doing?

Thanks for the advise. We found the windows back up disk and are installing from that. Only problem is we cannot read the windows serial number from the sticker under the laptop. I'm not sure what problems this might create.

Not something I've ever needed for HP, dell, sony, etc.

Most restore media disks do not require the windows serial number.
