Help! Thinkpad with dead HD

by stevelesser / April 12, 2008 11:49 PM PDT

I've got a Thinkpad R40-2897 (XP Pro) with a dead HD -- disk read error/won't boot. I don't have a recovery disk and don't need to access any data on the drive. I'd like to get this usable with the least investment and would appreciate any ideas.

Install a new live hard disk and since there are no restore CDs install that free LINUX. Now it's working and you can shop for some USB hard disk case for the dead drive or call http://www.drivesavers.com

Thanks for the link. The HD is too small to worry about, but the link looks useful.

Any thoughts about replacing the Operating System?

the OS is going to be new. As in a new copy of Windows XP, and all the device drivers for the laptop, as in video, sound, NIC, etc. The good thing about this is that IBM has all the drivers for all their machines.

It looks like you are in for a weekend project.

I got bored a whole back and just for grins I ran the recovery partition on an R-30. Bad decision. It took me two days of loading to get it back to normal. Loading as in all the IBM patches, Windows XP updates and patches, software installs, etc. Bad decision. The recovery program worked perfectly, but the rest was tiresome.
