Re: HELP/Sun Java Machine

I've found some java applets stop working as the JVM versions go up. The author gets to find out why and rewrite it.

Also, a new issue that I tripped over and am investigating is Firefox, some javascript that would not run and I found that the SETI program which was running in the background, when stopped, cured it. Seems the JVM is trying to be nice about CPU usage and should have just run anyway.

Looks like fun,

Can't tell. Here's why.
Jul 26, 2004 3:02AM PDT

In your first post you wrote:

"Doesnt work on my Lake Applets."

Since it's your Java code, you wrote it and now get to dive into your Java code and debug it. It's unlikely, that I would have your "Lake Applets."

For me, a few things broke, but digging in, it turns out I had a programming error in my code. Guess what? I get to fix it.

Guess what?? If i knew how to do that (fix it) it would already be Done..wouldnt have to be bothering the good folks like you and others here..Did all i knew how to do before i Posted here..Have you heard of JANIM?? Dont know how to put the site link here, but the address is:www.lakecards.com..Take a look see..Nice site and use their own Janim Machine, dont need Sun Java to view Applets,,and must say the cards are Beautiful..Thank you.

Maybe it's not your code?
Jul 26, 2004 3:29AM PDT

Maybe it's what you wrote that has an issue.

By writing "my Lake Applets", you wrote the applet is yours. Maybe you should have written... "I use the Lake Applets from some website and it doesn't work with the latest JVM."

In that case, you need to report this to the author of the Java applet so they can fix it.

We only have words to communicate with. Choose them with care.

Thank you

Re: Can't tell. Here's why.
Jul 26, 2004 3:31AM PDT

Probably not but Could it have anything to do with my settings in security programs, cookie settings, spysweeper etc??If i have my CommonAd Sites and Host FileShields enabled on Spysweeper i cant read here on CNET..all little red x's and words are very small and blurred but after i feel my way a message board forum the words are normal again can read good but still the x's are there and see no adds etc. This is the only site it does it on too (why)..Just thought i would ask about this..Thanks.

Here's why they say it works.
Jul 26, 2004 9:34AM PDT

The web master will look at it and shrug it off until the reports rise to some level where they will load up the latest JVM and browser to see what's up.

I noted one issue about why it didn't run, but it's something not that bad and I expect a fix in August. (But what year?)

Is Sun's Java the only choice available to use at this time?
Jul 26, 2004 11:29PM PDT

"Is Sun's Java the only choice available to use at this time??"

Java is not open source. SUN went to court over this and I'd rather not write more than was already written about this.

You did hear about that court case?

I have uninstalled SUN JAVA again..Guess im not installing the right one or something??it sure doesnt work.Ive even talked on phone to someone in CA.Told me to use java.com and use Offline Download, which i did, ended up being the same thing i had..Plugin is there and this is what i end up with:java2RuntimeEnviroment,SEv1.4.2_05,,windows-i586-p..fromsunsdllc1-46-Vhost2 sun.com.and starts out the size is 14.09MB ends up being 108.00MB,it uses windows install wizard, then a window opens that says Manager with 3 square boxes in it, each with bars and colors, smaller squares in them and ask if i want to add to desktop enviroment. In Programs, its listed as Java Startup, when i click that, it takes me back to Sun Home Page again..Its also listed in advanced settings in IE6 Tools, but again it says java start manager.Keep going in circles here..Am i using the correct page/link??(On sun site there is only one listed that says FREE,GET IT NOW)Had this on pc before and it worked but this is not what i had previously.

Re: HELP/Sun Java Machine/UPDATE

This is an area you will find annoying on a good day. If your JAVA code works today or applets you use fail when SUN issues a new JAVA RUNTIME, then you can be sure that others will start to note it too.

But there is no going back to the old version since the reason for the new version can be:

1. A security fix.
2. A language fix.
3. Other.

I agree with SUN that if it breaks a web page, then that may be correct behaviour since it points out that the JAVA code needs to be fixed.

Some want the JVM to fix their code.

Sumer, Just A Thought Here....

Does your WinXP machine have Microsoft's Virtual Machine installed? It's an older, less secure version of Java, but some sites were set up to use it and some computers work better using that version instead of Sun. Since it appears like you've already got the Sun Java uninstalled, you might want to try this.

Check this way:

Click on Start-Run, type "cmd" (without the quotes), then click on OK. When the command prompt loads, at the flashing cursor, type "jview" (without the quotes), then press the "Enter" key. If a window loads with the words "Microsoft Command Line Loader for Java Version 5.00.xxxx", (where xxxx is the version number) then you've already got it installed. If you get an error message, then it's not installed at all. The most recent version of Microsoft's VM is "5.00.3810". If you don't have the most recent version, you can install it from the link below. If you don't have it installed at all, you'll need to install the 3805 version FIRST from the link below, then install the 3810 update.:

http://www.virtualmachine.tk/

After installing VM, or if it's already installed, open "Internet Options" from the Control Panel, click on the "Advanced" tab, then make sure there is a CHECK mark in the box next to "JIT Compiler for Virtual Machine enabled".

No guarantees here, but it's something worth checking.
____________

It appears like you're doing something a little wrong with the Sun Java download. It should only be about 15 MB. I'm just exploring possibilities here, but here's how I do it:

Click on the link below to access the download site:

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html

Once there, click on the "Download J2SE JRE" link just below the "J2SE v 1.4.2_05 JRE includes the JVM technology" heading. At the next page, Accept the license agreement. At the next page, under the Windows platform, select the "Windows Offline Installation/Multi Language" link and it should download a 14.91 MB "j2re-1_4_2_05-windows-i586-p.exe" file to your desktop. Once it's there, shut down all background programs, including your antivirus program, then double click on the file to install Sun's Java.

Hope this helps.

Received this message @ command prompt:jview is not reconized as an internal/external command operable program or batch file..Guess this means i dont have it?Are you saying i can use MSVM still? or have to use the Sun Java? (im confused a bit)After reading over your instructions for sun download.seems to be exactly what i did and numerous times..it started at 14.50MB and after the last install it was 108.00MB.. downloads, installs each time but doesnt work and im almost sure its not the right thing is why...will try again if cant use MSVM..Thank you.

Re: Sumer, Just A Thought Here....UPDATE!
Jul 28, 2004 4:00AM PDT

Grif..I used your instructions.Have SunJava Installed again..It lets me see some Applets Cards on websites(greeting cards etc) but none of the ones that say: LAKE APPLETS (of course thats the ones i want)..Before though i couldnt see anything on any cards that included any type of Applet..With Lake APPLETS ones,i can see the picture now,(couldnt do that before)but at the bottom of card where water is flowing etc.all i can see is bunch of diffrent colors breaking up,jumping around and moving together very quickly and its like that at all websites i visit, checked out 5 diffrent ones.Wondering,,dont see a place in IE6/tools/advanced to enable java anymore and nothing about jit, javascript. However Something new is added:Below the HTTP1.1 settings is listed:JAVA(SUN)a box under that is checked saying: use JAVA 2v1.42_05 for <applet> (requires restart)..which i did. A Site i use a lot is: www.angelwinks.net/JavaMagic1PC.html..Tried all of them, none work for me. ; (

Sumer, Yes...You Can Install Microsoft's VM If You Want
Jul 28, 2004 8:24AM PDT

The "JIT compiler" box in Internet Options will only be there after the Microsoft Virtual Machine is installed. Since you don't have it installed, that explains why it's not present.

You should be able to use the links that I posted before to install the Microsoft Virtual Machine. As I mentioned before, you'll need to download and install the 3805 FULL version, then install the 3810 after wards. AFter you install it, you'll need to make sure that the "JIT compliler box is CHECKED and you'll also need to make sure that the SUN java is no longer the default java by opening the Control Panel, double click on the "Java" icon, then click on the "Browser" tab, (I think) and UNCHECK the box/dot next to "Internet Explorer".

Hope this helps.

Before i install MSVM,,Would my settings make a diffrence with the Sun Java? My Display settings are: Screen-800x600 Pixels...Color Quality: Medium - 16 bit..Would cookies settings etc make a diffrence..Checked out several other PC's today at Circuit City and Comp USA with SunJava installed, went to sites i use and every Lake Applet/Java card worked..Just thought would check here first before getting in deeper.

A counter-intuitive setting.
Jul 31, 2004 10:08AM PDT

What some only realize by testing is the 16-bit color depths can actually consume more CPU time thant a 32-bit color setting.

Why not try it?

I Uninstalled Sun Java first..Done some reading from other tech websites as well as here on this subject before making a decision..More people in tech field seem to favor MSVM over Sun Java..all i can say is MSVM worked for me..Thanks again.
