Help! Sony Cybershot DSC-S40 won't load to XP Home

Jun 13, 2005 1:09PM PDT

I have a Dell GX-60 OS Win XP Home.
The driver that came on disk for the Sony Cybershot DSC-S40 is not for XP and sony said that XP should start the Wizzard and load the correct drivers from within XP.
Well it will not.
It says it can not find the driver.
I just get the yellow ? mark beside SONY in the devises listed.
Anyone have a suggestion?

Step One:
Reread the instructions on how to connect the camera to the computer, paying particular attention to what mode the camera should be in.

Step Two:
If the Sony instructions don't say what mode the camera shoud be in:

Make sure that the camera is turned on and in "Playback" mode (the mode where you can view the photos on the LCD), before connecting it to the computer.

.........................

If that does not solve the problem, see if your USB bus is operational:

In the Device Manager, scroll down to the bottom and see if you find a device called "Universal Serial Bus controller".
And inside that device you should at least find "USB Root Hub".

If you do not have both of those devices, you need to contact Dell for instructions on how to load your motherboard USB drivers.

......................

If that checks out, then find a friend with a computer with the XP operating system and connect your camera to that computer.

If it does not work on that computer, then it is time to return the camera and get a replacement.

I have done all the instructions 100 times with no luck.I have not got ahold of a friend with XP Home as most are running XP Pro or 2000.
I do have an older IBM with win 98se and it loads no trouble at all and on Win. 2000 on a new HP Laptop.
It just seems that XP Home on my new Dell is not as versitle as I thought.
I have contacted Dell/Sony and waiting for a reply from Lexar but so far not one tech. seems to know anything more than the basics.
Really discourging me to buy any of their products ever again. May as well buy use it once and throw it away cameras.I can hardly believe a company like Sony would ahve thier name assoiated to and sell such junk!
Rick in Canada EH!
p.s. we had tornados here this week. Ride em cowboy!

This type of hookup works fine on my computers that have XP Home.

It sounds like the problem is with your computer.

Do you know for sure that the USB on your computer is working?

If you are not sure....have you checked to see if Universal Serial Bus is listed in the Device Manager?

Yes I checked and also tried it after putting all other items like printer, scanner on the same USB input port one at a time and they worked fine.
All items have their own USB port as I have 4 seperate ones in the computer to use/pick from.
Not a router or hub between them.

I also have driver problems with the DSC-S40
I also have XP on a Dell GX260
The problem is I can view and print thru the
provided photo software but I am unable to
safe to a file or a CD. I also have tried and
re-tried and have had no success.

Sony is not listed in the available drivers
already on the XP.
