Help setting up internet on new HP dv7-1135nr

Nov 22, 2008 4:57AM PST

I just bought this new laptop from Best Buy to replace a dying HP L2005CU. My college doesn't have reliable wireless in our dorms, so we are stuck with using Ethernet cords. I assumed that unplugging the cord from the L2005CU and putting it in the dv7-1135nr would be enough, but it acts like nothing is plugged in at all. I admit that I don't know much about computers but I was able to set up the old laptop 3 years ago with no problem and I thought my intelligence for computers/technology had gone up since then. I've gone through everything about setting up the internet on the laptop and in the included manuals and nothing seems to work. Am I missing some important step, or do I need a new type of cord for this new laptop? Does this have anything to do with the transition to Vista? I'm completely lost and entirely frustrated.

Thanks in advance! I really appreciate any and all help.

If you followed some basic instructions from elseware, you probably already did this. But just in case, try this. Unplug the power from your modem and router( if you have one ). Connect your ethernet cables from your high speed modem to the WAN port of your router and another cable from the router to the computer. If you don't have the router, then just modem to computer. Power up the modem first. Wait for it to get block sync. Then power up router(if any) wait for it to lock in, then turn on computer. The thing is to to connect with no power then power up.
