Question

Help! Setting up home Network during a remodel

Oct 10, 2018 10:43PM PDT

I'm about to remodel my home, and while the walls are open, I want to hardwire my home for a gigabit ethernet wired network.

My question is: am I planning this correctly? I understand the basics of networking, but am in NO WAY an expert.

I have AT&T UVERSE internet currently (although I may switch).
My plan is to place my UVERSE modem/router in my office, connect it to a Netgear JGS516PE-100NAS.

Then I would connect a couple Ubiquiti Dual-Radio PRO Access Points (maybe one on each side of the house & one on the back patio), to the POE ports so we can use WiFi devices in the home & back yard. If I understand correctly, these access points will just allow connection to the UVERSE router via WiFi: the UVERSE router will still control the "name" of the WiFi network, the password, etc???

The non-POE ports would be to run CAT6 to various rooms of the home, where an Ethernet plug would be located, to hard-wire connect to the internet, as well as a network storage device, smart TV's, Blue-Ray players, XBox, etc.

Do the UVERSE DVR & receivers have to connect straight to the AT&T UVERSE box, or can they just be connected through the Gigabit switch as well?

Do I have this right? Am I missing anything? This stuff is daunting for a barely-tech-savvy guy. Any corrections, help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

That doesn't look bad. Just read the manuals, and try with the cables on the floor in stead of on the wall.

Ceiling- mount

I was planning on ceiling-mounting the Access Points. That will necessitate running the Cat6 PoE cables up the wall & across the rafters.
Do in-wall cables interfere with WiFi signals?

Never to the point it matters.

WiFi if barely working might be affected but that's an edge case that could see moving a couch change WiFi so my answer is no to cables interfering with WiFi.

Kees is spot about trying it before getting stuck in the walls. Also, the building codes usually mandate PLENUM RATED CABLE so you may get stuck with a roll of cable, cable ends, crimper and learning how to make your own end connections. The good news is you can copy the color scheme from working cables or use the Internet.
