Help setting up a Hub

May 23, 2007 3:20PM PDT

I have just recently bought a hub to connect more computers that my router is able to hold. I know nothing about connecting a hub up etc...
Anyway i was plugging in the cable modem using a regular ethernet cable into port 1. Then i plugged in my computers etherent cable into port 2. Then i plugged in my Netgear WPN824 router into port 3. Whenever i try and connect to the internet either the router or the computer is recieving internet. It is neither both.
I came here in hope to see if someone could please help me figure out my problem of connection a wireless router and computers to the same hub. (Do i need a crossover cable?)

Thanks

Try this connectivity

Internet --- cable modem --- router --- hub or switch

Cable modem connects to router's WAN port.
Hub/switch connects to a numbered port on router.

Hub

Run an Ethernet cable from the modem's LAN port to the router's WAN port. Then plug the hub into one of the regular numbered ports on the router. All computers plugged into the hub will receive IP addressing configuration from the router if DHCP is enabled.
