Help, screen wrecked

Screen covered with huge ugly splotches, apps still work underneath, but unusable from sight. Reacts to touching or jiggling screen. Please help

That looks like hardware. Reseat the cable or replace the screen.
I assume an external monitor is OK. If that has the same issues, replacing the motherboard might help.

How would I go about replacing the monitor? I'm on a road trip, so I have not tried an external monitor.

On travel this can be so expensive that I've rarely resorted to repair. On a business trip I'll work with the home office to get a working laptop. Depending on where I was in the world they would ship another or authorize buying one on the road.
