Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2400+,

Bios Settings
IDE Primary Master: MAXTOR 6Y080L0
IDE Primary Slave: None (unable to change to auto)
IDE Secondary Master: CD-RW IDE 5224
IDE Secondary Slave: SONY DVD?ROM DDU1621

Properties for CDWRITER IDE5224
Device Type: DVD/CD-ROM drives

Status: Device working properly
Driver: cdrom.sys
Driver Version: 5.1.2535.0

Properties for SONY DVD/CD-ROM drives
Device Type: DVD/CD-ROM drives
Manufacturer: (Standard CD-ROM drives)
Location: Location 1 (1)
Status: Device working properly
Driver: cdrom.sys
Driver Version: 5.1.2535.0

The problem: when I turn on the PC everything works fine apart from when a CD of any file type is inserted to the CD, it reads lights flickering etc but when the drive is explored it shows nothing on the disc likewise with the DVD?s however if I leave the discs inserted and log off, as I have currently 3 users set up then log back in I am able to explore both drives without any problems, but it is annoying that I have to do this everytime.
Any advice?

Has it always done this???
Apr 16, 2005 1:20AM PDT

Would help to know these things as it might indicate a difference between a hardware or software settings problem.
If you have Nero InCD or Roxio DirectCd stop them loading and get updates - also stop all other media type of software loading using msconfig eg media players, CD burning programs and anything else that uses the CDROM drives
Stop All auto insert notifications and see if this makes a difference
Check to see if you have direct memory access turned on for your CDroms.
If it has always happened then check master slave settings - update mother board and bios drivers.
Here is some link for trouble shooting CDROMs

Only recently.

Thanks for the response AussiePete and I apologise in advance for my limited computer abilities.

It?s only started happening recently and I had already done motherboard and bios update.
If direct memory access is viewed in the device manager / resources by connection it indicates ?2 standard floppy disc controller? & ?4 direct memory access controllers?
I think I managed to stop all media type software in the configuration utility but I don?t understand how to stop all auto insert notifications anyway I restarted but no change, however whilst in the utility I tried the Diagnostic Start Up and when I restarted the CD and DVD drive worked exactly as it should.
Does this suggest anything?

Regards,
Simon.

We are getting there

It must be something that is loading at startup. By checking the diagnostic method you have essentially stopped everything from loading - its now just a matter of finding out which program or service is the cause. Its now just a matter of elimination
Step 1
uncheck the diagnostics method
Then under selective startup uncheck the following items in order, rebooting between each item until your CD works properly
>load startup items
>load system services
>process win.ini
>process systems.ini

It will more than likely be something in the "load startup items" - if so, you then have to go to the "startup" tab and by elimination once again find which item.
If it is in the services then go to the services tab - first uncheck all non-windows items (you can do this by check the "hide all Microsoft services"
and so on.....
Let me know how you go

CD DVD problem resolved

After following your msconfig instruction I disabled the culpret "U-Storage Tools2" and uninstalled it. Did the trick mate, cheers.

The software is supplied is by a company called Compucessory it?s for USB Flash memory stick 128MB Model 91002 that I installed recently. The software is supplied as a tool to enable the end-user to partition the stick to restrict public access and allow private access via of a password interface.

Within the PDF instructions supplied, Mr Chang the author states known problems, but alas not the one I have been frustrated with.

Details:

SYSTEM CONFIGURATION UTILITY - START UP

STARTUP ITEM: U-Storage Tools2
COMMAND: C:\Program Files\u-storage tools2.5\ustorage.exe_ sys_ auto run C:\Program Files\u-Storage Tools2.5
LOCATION: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Me thinks product recall.

Thanks Pete for all your help.

I think the taste of your hat (when your eating it) an choking on those corks whilst the chorus of rule Brittania is rubbing your face in the quicksand will make a great wallpaper for my desktop.

Just kidding mate, again thanks for your help.
