HELP! Refresh time takes several minutes & increasing, why?

Jul 30, 2004 2:25AM PDT

Using Win XP,512 ram,80 g hard drive[1/2 full]& Norton antivirus. When I am in the folder that contains my over 1,000 family pictures, my computer continually freezes up for up to several minutes. Also during Dragon dictate my computer pauses often & does not type out accurately. There are 52 processes running in Windows Task Manager, I'm not sure if this is related to the problem. I have tried to close as many things on Taskbar as possible to troubleshoot, but no difference. I have defragged, run Spybot & Adware remover. What do you think is causing this? If I bought & put my pics onto a second drive would this resolve the problem, or anything else I could try. Thanks

"When I am in the folder that contains my over 1,000 family pictures, my computer continually freezes up for up to several minutes."

I'm not surprised. Explorer is reading all those files and decoding the pictures, making thumbnails and make even crash if a corrupt image is found.

Want to go twice as fast?

Put 1/2 the files in their own directory.

For me, my family photos are in Month and Year folders. It's rare to get 300 photos in a month.
