HELP RECOVERING DATA

Nov 14, 2006 6:48AM PST

Here's what happened. I had 3 partitions (C,D,J) and tried to merge J into D using Partition Magic. I got the error 1520: External Attribute Header Mismatch. Lost D (and J) drive completely (in appareance only, thank god) and used Acronis Disk Director to repair errors and reassign the drive letter to D. So far so good, disk size is correct too. The problem now is even though Windows can see D again and inside it, I cant access the data. There is only one folder (named BACKUP) in D and everything is in there...about 130gb.

I MUST recover all of this, but I dont know what utility is good for the job.

Any input is appreciated, thanks in advance.
Oh and it's a 400gb SATA2 Seagate, if it makes any difference.

Contact Symantec.

Probably, they are only one who know how to do it, because they wrote the program.
That being said, you're not very clear about the problem: if everything is in one folder (named backup) and Windows can see that folder, why can't you access the data? Is it compacted, encrypted, renamed, all in one file? You don't tell and we can't guess.

It's ironic that this one word (backup) is a reminder of what you didn't do before starting the repartitioning. And maybe never, or you would be able to restore these data (or most of it).
A calculated risk, maybe. But still a risk, as you discovered.

And remember what Bert de Vries (a Dutch politician) once said: "If we CAN'T do what we MUST, we must do what we can."

Best of luck,

Kees

Its called BACKUP cause that what it was. That folder was on J drive and it had everything that was on D drive. then i formatted D drive and then when I tried to merge both partitions i got the error message.

So I will repeat. Windows can see the folder but cant access it. If i knew why I wouldnt be asking. I assume since the D-J merge didnt succesfully happen, the data got corrupted somehow. In Acronis DM I CAN see the data and browse through it. The folder has a bunch of sub folders.

It always helps ...

to give as clear a description of the problem as possible. "Can't access it" is a little bit vague, an error message would have been much more informative, because it can be googled or is recognized by somebody.

Anyway, the "take ownership" solution seems a very likely one. If not, tell more.

Yes, you are right. It was vague but I was pretty much desperate and typed as fast as I could. Anyways the problem was solved by taking ownership back. Seems weird to me since I never "lost" the ownership of those folders as far as I know. All files are ok, whew Grin

Thank you both for your input.
