Help. Random shutdown / reboot. ASUS!!!!!

Feb 28, 2017 9:40AM PST

Hi guys.
Great site. New member. Computer literate.
I'm about to deliver my ASUS computer to ASUS offices and smash it in their lobby. Disgusted with their crap quality.
My issue. Very common yet not exactly....

ASIS CM1855
Bought it 3.5 years ago.
Straight prebuilt.

The past week it has been shutting down and restarting on its own. Sometimes I push the power on button on front and it does not respond. Then seconds later it turns on by itself.
Shut down. Restart. Shut down. No power. Maybe 10 mins later it will start again. Even if I don't touch power button.

I have ripped everything out. Piece by piece I have added video card, new keyboard, new mouse.

I have swapped a new PSU. Still no power on or random crashing. Bare bones with just 1 stick of ram and still no power or crashing.
I have not seen the BSOD.

This is the weird thing. I took it a friends shop. He plugs it in and it starts. No crashes. EVER! We ran the computer for an hour yesterday there and NO crashes.

I've tried reinstalling windows to make sure it wasn't software.

I get back home. I use 3 different wall plugs and nothing but mouse keyboard hdmi cable from monitor. ALL BRAND NEW ... Anddddd crashing or no power starting.

I am perplexed.
I'm at the point of giving up.
If we could find the issue, that would be fine. I'd replace the damn MOBO or whatever else.
However it is crashing only at my home!!!!

Can anyone share their experiences here? I see multiple threads yet they almost all point to a faulty USB slot or PSU.

I can't explain how new parts still give me the same issue.
No overheating problems. Temperatures are good. Bios is updated to latest from ASUS.

Please let me know if I missed anything. I'm typing this on my phone. Any help is very appreciated.

I can post specs if needed.

I'm confused.

Are you reporting it's been this way for 3.5 years? It's a shame it was bad from day one but let's see the speccy as well as the make, model of the PSU.

Since it's been bad for years (I only have your post claiming bad quality design and not as if it wore out and needs repair) I fear the fix is going to be a new motherboard and that will trigger other costs like OS, and RAM.

I believe the OP

said that the past week it has been shutting down and restarting on its own Bob.

About tossing it had me thinking this is a long standing issue. I hope the OP can tell us more.

That is, no machine works forever but some folk feel otherwise.

A week with issues
Feb 28, 2017 10:51AM PST

It's started about a week ago. Before that everything was fine. I've owned it for 3.5 years.

Thank you for the quick responses guys. I'm always on this site - so much useful help. Just joined

Once I'm home few hrs I will post specs.

I don't see any reason for it to mess up. My thought is it needs repair. The clues so far do not tell us what to replace yet.

with my aforementioned friend above.
Piece by piece and no issues found.

What is driving me nuts is the issue is only evident at my house. At my friends computer shop it ran fine.

I've had multiple pcs and parts and always found issues on other desktops. This one is ridiculous.
We cannot see the issue at his shop. At my place there are issues. I even thought the 115 volt/230 volt red tab on the back of my pc might have switched LOL
Unless there's a ghost who moved into my house a week ago, or there's an FBI force field around my house - it makes no sense why the issue happens only when I'm alone with the machine!!

I've used multiple wall plugs. No power bar. Straight into the wall plug. New hdmi cord. New psu. New mouse / keyboard. Problem persists.

My frustration is I don't expect this from ASUS. An untraceable issue. I guess that's silly, but in all my computer repairs I have never experienced this.
And I have no parts at home like I used to, so I can't test like I could in the past.
Ughhhh

I've had nearly untraceable issues with all makes.

The industry never got their act together on diagnostics so we are left with almost always a guess and swap to tell system.

As to the works in the shop issue, I had one like that and the owner had left the display at home. Once we got every part in the shop we found an iffy display or cable. To upset everyone the display worked on other PCs but not this one. It could have been a video card issue but the owner didn't want to pay for more testing so he picked up a new display and called it done.

I hear you about the industry here as I ran PC repair shops for years.

As the above poster said about the industry - yeh I'm fed up. Can't seem to diagnose this and I about to purchase new. Wow. So frustrating.

This morning
Mar 1, 2017 6:57AM PST

.. I pressed the power on button and the computer did not respond.
After 4-5 seconds it turned on by itself. !!!!!!

It booted into AmericanTrends screen, where I must press F1 to enter setup.
Then it went into my bios.

As from previous posters on this issue, the trick I tried here was to:

Disable fastboot.
Save and reboot.
It automatically goes back into my bios.
At that point, I go to CSM compatibility and enable.
I save settings and it now boots to desktop.

The computer has been running for about 15 minutes now.

Mar 1, 2017 12:11PM PST

Checking speccy now.

FYI the computer ran for a good 3 hrs.

Did the start menu shutdown.
Waited 15 minutes.
Pressed power. Nothing.
Held power 4-5 seconds and it started up and into bios.
Anytime the computer is off, and then restated, it always goes into bios and I have to do the thing I mentioned above - disable fastboot, go back in enable gsm and then I can boot into my desktop.

My Speccy reading.
Mar 1, 2017 1:07PM PST

1. RAM is mixed. As in, not all the same make, model in all slots.
This can lead to very odd issues. Unplug the 2GB stick for now.

2. This machine has parts from 2012. As such, I will not respond well to "not heat" stands.
a) Put in a NEW CMOS BATTERY.
b) Do the canned air cleaning anyway.
c) If the owner is a gamer or leaves the machine on all day, arrange to replace all heatsink compound in the entire PC and clean as you go.

3. "Local 192.168.1.114:49169:
ESTABLISHED Remote 192.168.1.149:445 (Querying... ) (Windows shares)"
This usually happens when a share to another PC is active but the other PC is gone or off. I'd disconnect that share until troubles are gone.

4. SSDMonitor. Can't find a SSD so I'd remove this.

Much thx for such rapid responses
Mar 1, 2017 2:07PM PST

I have turned the PC on again now, for about 2 hrs. No issues. It seems to be once it shuts down, a start is the issue and I'm sent directly into the bios. Obviously not stable.

I am starting on these suggestions and will comment on how it goes.
Great assistance here guys.

Paragraph 2a, battery is something I'd get done before much else. It's old enough and the symptom matches to me.

I can't say how much you guys haves helped.

I have to ask.
Mar 1, 2017 4:02PM PST

I worry about you having it replaced. This should be a do it yourself under 5 buck battery.

Read http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000239.htm

Be sure the power is unplugged during the work in case you oops and drop the battery inside the machine. No power means unplugged and far safer.

Error
Mar 3, 2017 4:39AM PST

Would #3 be related to my router? That address looks like the router url. Should I reset my router?

I assume I should search for ssdmonitor instances and delete all of them, including the program that installed it?

I have cleaned all cables behind desk. Nothing touching metal. No bent or twisted cables. The connected devices are all new wires, simple setup.
I'll also mention I'm using a Cisco router in my setup. And a separate modem is connected as well. I have a wireless card installed in PC.
Nothing else using the wall plug. No overloading the plug. Just the PC plug directly into wall. Modem, router and monitor into my power bar.

I purchased the new 3v battery.
And
ive replaced battery. Was I supposed to do anything more than changing the date in the bios??

The power issues remain.

Also now once computer does boot up, once I'm on the desktop, my mouse can select items but double clicking them has no effect.

I've hit CTL ALT DEL to see which processes are running, but the window never appears. I'm lost.

Item 3.
Mar 3, 2017 8:07AM PST

To me this reads as a share was made to another PC.

THIS IS NOT a cause of reboots AFAIK but worth removing just in case it's contributing.

BATTERY. I can't answer. I don't own your PC but I like machines that you set the time and load defaults. HERE'S THE DEAL. With millions of PCs out there most owners will not know if their PC needs the SATA MODE to be set to ISQ Level 20. (fictional value here for discussion sake.) So my view is that mass produced or even made machines SHALL operate with the defaults.

As to the CTL ALT DEL issue that can be a damaged OS or malware/trojan. It doesn't tell us much. Especially if it locks up. MORE:

MORE: If the machine locks up, I don't expect this to work.
MORE: If the machine is responding the CTL ALT DEL can be hijacked so I know to right click on the taskbar to get to the task manager.

If I didn't write it, be sure to scan with Grif's help at http://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions/how-to-remove-pup-option-603542/#post-f742c795-5881-433b-a29b-6d758efe5cd3

Mar 3, 2017 9:05AM PST

The was freezing because of software. Indeed it was Komodo antivirus. I wanted to run diagnostics .... anyway all good on software.

Power button and restarts still evident.

Getting to be long thread.
Mar 3, 2017 9:17AM PST

Hope you find this.

Power button doesn't start the machine and restarts often lead me to a subpar power supply and/or a bad motherboard.

I know of no test for these that don't require a rig costing more than the PSU and board. But there are signs here. Will we use them?

That is, I think the PSU is 3.5 years old. Replace it with a new SINGLE RAIL MODEL with 100 more Watts and hope that helps. I think someone mentioned cleaning and compound so I won't duplicate that here and assume the work was done.

- Collapse -
Yes well let me thank u guys
Mar 3, 2017 10:11AM PST

I've tried a 550 watt PSU will no difference. Still random powering on, no effect pushing power button or the power button blinks a few times and then nothing.

It must be MOBO. Or something I just can't diagnose.

I will stay tuned to this thread but I agree - thread is getting long and I don't know what else to try.

MOBO could be replaced. If I do that, am I correct in assuming the last issue would be dying CPU??

Many thanks everyone.
