Help purchasing a new laptop

by haybarn564 / January 10, 2010 5:03 AM PST

I am looking to buy a new laptop, and of course, am overwhelmed by all the options out there. I don't know a ton about laptops, so I'm hoping someone can help. Here are the things I am looking for:
I am a grad student, so I need something that can run your standard word processing software
I'd like something with a battery life of at least 3 hours so that it can make it through a class, but the more the better
I'd also like something not too heavy, as I carry it to class every day (my current laptop is a Dell Insprion 6400, which is about 6.5 lb, and I'd like to go lighter in the future)
I don't do any hardcore gaming on my laptop, although I do play some online games
I do surf the internet a lot and use the internet for a lot of school work (searching for articles online)
I use my laptop for listening to music through itunes, and occasionally streaming music on pandora (although not too frequently)
And like everyone, I don't want to spend more than I need to

Any recommendations? Thanks! If you have additional questions, fire away and I'll add what I can.

Thanks for all of your help!
