Are you sure ...

you installed the correct drivers for your new videocard in your new tower. Most, if not all, issues like yours are caused by not installing them.

Hope this helps.

I agree with Kees. It is probably (ALMOST CERTAINLY!) a driver issue.
If it is a truly old monitor you may be out of luck. I have an old PacBell monitor that won't go higher than 640 x 480 if I want more than 16 colors ... I've tried but can't locate updated drivers for this monitor. I have the current drivers for my video card but drivers for the monitor are also an issue. With the current drivers for my video card and the generic SVGA drivers for the monitor (as opposed to the PacBell specific driver) I'm stuck at 640 x 480 x 16 colors. If I use the Win98 resident driver for the PacBell monitor I can get the higher color depth as long as I don't increase resolution.
Fortunately the PacBell is a back up monitor and not in regular use.

So I guess what I am saying is get the current up to date drivers for your video card (you'll need them no matter how this works out) AND get the most up to date driver for your specific monitor. If you are still stuck at low resolution and/or color depth after installing the drivers then I guess it's time to consider a new monitor.

In your post you describe it as a "IPEX" monitor ... If it truly is an "Ipex" monitor then you may need to do some digging to get the drivers off the web. You might try this website: http://drivers.ipex.com.au/
I would look closely at the monitor ... Look for some indication that it is something else and Ipex just branded it with their name. Also, if you have disks from your old system they may have drivers specific to this monitor.
If you have the drivers -whether downloaded fom the web or on disk- you may have to go the "Have Disk" option when selecting the monitor in the set up routine.
If you get this far and need help Post again...

I am guessing/hoping that your "new" Gateway has the current drivers for what ever video card is in it.

the comp isnt brand new... i won it on ebay... (its new for uni student who were living with a 1.2 gig hard drive thats forsure!! )

i dont know what card is in there... i dont know how to find it either... umm... i cant seem to find an Ipex monitor driver... atm... my comp is set at:

800x600x16 colours... the monitor...(well the only way i could get it to do a smaller type visual is set it as a laptop display panel... i know its wrong but nothing else would let me make everything i see on the screen smaller... otherwise i was dealing with BIG screens where i couldnt see the ends and VERY large fonts etc...)

i'm no expert i only know moderate things... i do know how to install drivers etc as for hardware i am hopeless.. umm i have changed the 800x600 to evey generic drives i have... also the monitor has gone through all the generics as well... Ipex is not listed in both areas... so i'm not sure... i came to the conclusion the screen is too old?... i have had it for at least 7 years and i think before that it was a uni screen.

thanx guys for all your help

What To Do.
Nov 25, 2004 4:32PM PST

First try a different monitor to see if it's a monitor problem or a video-card/driver problem. That's easy: practically any monitor will do.

If another monitor works OK, the problem is solved.

If it's a video-card/driver problem (which I suppose, but one never knows for sure) you'll really have to dig into the machine and/or the gateway site to search for the driver. Or go and buy and install a brand new videocard (the entry level models aren't so very expensive). But before you do that, be sure about the current video: if it's a separate card, there's no problem, but if it is integrated on the motherboard you probably have to go into the BIOS to disable it.

If you feel you're not up to the task, have it done at a qualified computer shop.

First let me confirm some points:
1. the monitor was working fine on an older PC
2. you moved the monitor to a "new" Gateway PC and now the monitor won't display more than 16 colors at 800 x 600
3. from the context of your Posting I am assuming it says "Ipex" on the front of the monitor?

Assuming these 3 points are correct then I would:
Happy With everything closed -no open applications to get in the way- right click the Desktop and in the pop down menu click Properties to get
Happy the display properties window. In this window go to the Settings tab on the far right
Happy near the bottom right of the Settings tab window there is an Advanced button - click it
Happy Under the Advanced window you should see some tabs at the top ... the exact tabs vary depending on the drivers installed but what we are looking for (and should be there) is the Adapter tab - click it
Happy Under the Adapter tab do you see a specific adapter listed as opposed to a generiic adapter. Mine says "Rage Pro..." if a none specific adapter is listed it might say something like "Standard PCI VGA" or some such. If it says something like this (as opposed to something like "Rage Pro") then you need to go to Gateway's web site and look for the driver for your system. I would assume (unless you know this is not the case!) I would assume the Gateway has the original video card. So if you ID the Gateway model then enter it in the correct place on Gateway's web site you should be able to find out what came with the Gateway including the video card. Lets assume the correct driver (non-generic)is installed and go on:
Happy Now back at the top, among the tabs, you should see one labeled Monitors - click it
Happy In your Posting you mentioned trying to use a "everest home edition". I am hoping there are drivers on the CD... I am assuming this is on a CD. Put the CD in your drive and
Under the Monitor tab does it show your monitor? No then click the Change button immediately to the right. This will start you down the path of telling your Gateway what monitor is attached. Follow the steps until it asks where the drivers are. At this point tell the PC to look on the CD... Hopefully it will find the drivers there. If it finds something in the following steps it'll tell you. Give it a try if it finds something. If it doesn't find anything then time for a new monitor or a trip to the computer tech shop.

Grin Assuming you get drivers for BOTH your monitor and the video card ... Drivers SPECIFIC to your hardware then it is time to adjust the display. Try it at 800 x 600 and 256 colors. If this works try upping the color depth to 16K colors. If this works try more if you want. If it gets to the point of being unreadable then you may need to play with refresh rate... The best choices are either Adapter Default or Optimal. If it is set to either of these and you are having problems set the refresh to a low number such as 60MHz. If this fixes the problem you can try a higher refresh rate ... The higher the refresh rate the better for your eyes.

BY THE WAY - Trying a different monitor IS a good first step. If the Gateway is running video card specific drivers and a different monitor works fine then it almost certainly is either your original monitor or the drivers (or lack of drivers) for your original monitor.

ALSO - When making changes on the Display Properties there are two points to cover:
1. On the General tab near the bottom is (usually) an option to apply changes without restarting. This option makes this whole process a lot easier. If you make a change that makes the display unreadable don't do anything and it should reset itself after about 15 seconds.
2. If you ever do get the display screwed up and unreadable restart in Safe Mode (F8 at Start Up) and set the Display Properties to standard VGA settings then Rastart.

AND another point - If you set the display to 640 x 480 and this allows you to go higher then 16 colors then this would be one more bit of evidence that it is a driver issue.

Hope this helps

If you end up needing/wanting a new monitor try your local University. I recently had to replace my monitor and I found the university has a department that sells all their old hardware ... I got a 17" monitor (a Dell D1025TM) for $35.00!!!

Hey! Here ya go ( u u u u u u u u u ) ... a bunch of "U"s for the silly feriners who spell "color" with a "U" as in "colour"! Grin Grin Wink

Ooops! A couple of points

Near the bottom of my Post I say "then" when I should have said "than"... Sorry. I know it's anal but...

Also if you want to reset Refresh rates go to the Adapter tab under Display Properties. Near the bottom is a place labeled "Refresh Rate". Click the little down arrow and make your selection.

Hope this all helps
