Question

Help please! Built computear was working, now won't turn on

Sep 4, 2018 1:35PM PDT

Hi everyone! I built a computer a month ago and started it right up after assembling. It's worked great this whole time able to play games (on high settings, finally!) and get on the internet.

I usually turn it off each night but one night I didn't. The next time I turned it off it refused to turn back on. When plugged in, the LEDs on the motherboard light up, and when I press the power button it flashes white once but doesn't do anything else.

I've tried unplugging and letting it rest for a while before plugging it back in. I've double checked all my connections to the motherboard as well as removing the graphics card. I've also tried different plugs, both wall and surge protectors.

Any help?

Also, when I attached the cooler to the processor I'm afraid I might have screwed it in a little too hard. I have since loosened it. Could that have caused this?

Thank you for your help! If you need any more info, let me know.

Answer
"Make it smaller."

When I have "THE DEAD PC" on the bench (google that!) I always start with making the machine as small as possible. With many Intel CPUs I can pull the GPU and test that quickly. But the usual I run into over and over on new builds is the owner put in too many motherboard standoffs. I usually have to pull the motherboard to find that.

Will try

A few questions upfront (I'm new at this computer stuff):
What do you mean by motherboard standoffs?
And if it has booted up no problem for a month will your solution still apply?

Here are some answers.

Let's see if Google defines that part. https://www.google.com/search?q=motherboard+standoffs says it's a common part by that name.

As to the month, yes. But I didn't call it a solution, just something I run into on many home built PCs. The PC is fine for a time since the circuit traces are painted over. As time passes the standoff rubs through the paint. At worst you need a new motherboard, but that's only a small fraction of the time so we remove the extra, test but can never warrant the work since the motherboard is forever suspect.
