Help pick a new TV...

Mar 25, 2008 6:53AM PDT

I have $2500 and am looking for a new TV, leaning towards plasma. What would you do? Right now, I am leaning towards the Pioneer Elite PRO1150HD, but I hate that it is only 720p. Any help?

the new panny plasmas

i would take a look at the new 1080 p panny plasmas.

arguments about the tv size needed to tell a difference in 720 vs. 1080 p aside, you've already identified yourself as someone who won't be able to live with 720 p.

I AGREE WITH BEAN, THE NEW PANASONICS WILL BE THE STANDARD.

THE TH-xxPZ85U
TH-xxPZ800U & the
TH-xxPZ850U..........Price-wise Pannys all the way.

Not only that, PANASONIC is showing better, PICTURE QUALITY MODELS than PIONEER is offering. PIONEER hasn't released new intro models, as
of yet.

As much as I am PANNY fan, I have no knocks against PIONEER except
their retail PRICES.

riverledge.

Coming this November, I will have had my 42 inch panasonic plasma for three years and it has done well. I say that to say this, I would go with panasonic. As soon as my wife says that we can get another tv, I am going to get a 50 inch 1080p panny.

I have been looking into a new TV too. I would like to get an extended warranty and have heard about getting them online. Has anyone else done this?

I hear that purchasing extended warranties are expensive. Besides New televisions come guaranteed with a 1 year warranty. Also if you decide that you need the extended warranty after you purchase the tv, you can. I purchased an extended warranty for 1 year at a local store Rex tv. It only cost me about $40.00, but never had to use it. So if you purchase a tv at a local store, Rex tv, handy tv, or hhgregg, they may give you a deal on an extended warranty.

Online TV Warranty

I ended up going with an online warranty through dtvexpress.com, the prices were definitely right and when I called them up the customer service seemed good.

Kind of late to ask now but has anyone else tried them?

No

but I bought a Mack warranty thru an AVS powerbuy for my PJ, and the pricing was silly too good IMO. They've been established 70 years. They do flat panels too.

Mack Warrentee
Sep 18, 2008 6:03AM PDT

A Mack warrentee is 3 years and it begins the day you buy the TV. Most Visa Cards will extend warrenty for one year and it's free.

interesting, if that's the case for flat panels

my Mack warranty is 6 yrs on the PJ, and 5 years on the bulb. Two free bulbs are included.

Seeing that two bulbs cost about $800, Im pretty glad I got the entire combo for $260.

Mack Warranty

I checked out the Mack Warranty on AVS and the discussions there don't mirror the ones I found on other places on the web. I've seen too many complaints about Mack service.

AVSforum seems very "cliquey" and everyone just promotes the products of folks who pay to advertise there. I think it's funny that I can find tons of complaints about Mack warranties on the web but almost none turn up in a very popular electronics forum where people who sell them happen to advertise. If it walks like a duck...

If I run into any issues with the warranty I purchased I'll be sure to report back here. I hope I never have to use it but with my luck my TV will die the week before the super bowl Happy

if you say so

i don't think its anymore cliquey than here TBH. And I dont think AVSers promote their "own" brands.

Did you know AVS themselves are a store? Has that every occurred to you? Yeah, I bought my PJ from them.

you're right about Mack, people do have to jump thru hoops sometimes. Guess what, I read about that at AVS. OTOH, I never once read yet (though Im sure its happened) that someone got scrooed. Just have to jump thru a hoop or be insisting.

I have over 1000 posts at AVS. Over 1000 posts at Audioholics. And over 1800 here. I think I have a pretty good idea.

That's just what I've observed lurking there. I've never seen a post last there that promotes a retailer that doesn't advertise with them.

To me that kind of makes all the purchasing advice handed out there fishy. It's a great place for technical advice but I'd never take buying advice from them, it's just like asking a commissioned sales guy his opinion.

Check out Costco online
Sep 18, 2008 5:30AM PDT

Online, Costco has their 50" Pioneer Kuro 1080p for $3299 and the 50" Panasonic 1080p for $1799. They offer delivery and they offer warranties, but they also double the Mfg warranty. Don't know how this compares to other online sites.

Well, I guess Dan does us one better!

Cool

Costco is as good as a warranty as there is. I'm going out on a limb, and say its the best warranty . . . and costs nothing . . . !
