Help. PC starts playing audio by itself

by stratplaya / March 24, 2009 11:05 PM PDT

About a week ago I noticed that for no apparent reason I would start to get audio playing on my PC. The audio seems to an entertainment feed that includes interviews and some music. However, there is never a station ID so I can't be sure of the source.

When I run task manager I notice that iexplore.exe is running even though I didn't start IE. Whenever I stop the iexplore.exe process, the audio will stop as well. A few minutes later iexplore.exe is running again but the audio won't start right away.

I have McAfee Security Center installed and it tells me my PC is clean.

How can I find what is starting the iexplore.exe and playing this audio automatically?

Thanks for the tips

Shortly after posting my original message I scanned again with McAfee which found 5 items and quaranteened them. However, I was still getting ieplore.exe starting on every 8th minute of the hour, i.e. 10:08, 10:18, 10:28, etc.

I downloaded and installed What's Running 2.2 to see more detail for each process running on my PC. I found that each time iexplore.exe would start up it would connect to IP addresses in the range of and

I then tried to install the Malware Tools you suggested but they wouldn't install. I then tried to rename the EXE but that didn't work either. I then rebooted and that allowed me to run Malwarebytes Anti-malware. I did a quick scan and it found 3 items, two deep in the registry and one in \WINDOWS\system32\uacinit.dll (Trojan.Agent) which it was able to delete on another reboot.

So at this point it appears that I am clean. Thanks again for your help.
