HELP, PC freezing!!!

Mar 3, 2004 11:46AM PST

Hi, I'm new to these forums, and desperately in need of help. My computer is about one year old and going through lots of problems, a friend built it so i can't take it to a store.
The main issue is that it freezes EVERY single time i try and burn a CD. No matter what i do.

Things that i have done:
1- New memory
2- New Sound Card
3- New ATA Cable
4- Tried a Different Burner, and it reacted the same.
5- Tried a Different Burning program, reacted the same.
6- Put in a new Hard Drive, and still no difference.

If you have any answers please let me know.
thanks
casey

Casey, We Need More Info
Mar 3, 2004 12:12PM PST

Whenever posting questions on these forums, please give us as much information as possible about your computer. We need the operating system, processor speed, amount of RAM installed, brand name of the computer, (if there is one), and any EXACT error messages you are receiving, and the EXACT version of Virus Scan, plus the scan engine and virus defintions that you have installed. (RIGHT click on the McAfee shield, or red "M", in the lower right corner, choose "About Virus Scan".) The more information you give us, the better informed our answer will be.

In the meantime, make sure you shut down all the unnecessary start up programs and services which might be conflicting with your burner programs. Make sure you shut down your antivirus and firewall programs when doing a burn.

Hope this helps.

One strange thing is that the computer still reads CD's perfectly fine. It went through the XP install with no trouble, and can play music CD's fine.

I dont think that is the problem, because I had been burning fine on this computer for over a year, when all of a sudden the PC couldnt do it.

Another thing: The CD drive will light up and spin when the PC freezes. I have also tried burning at a slower speed.

Thanks for your help,
Casey

Check cables?
Mar 4, 2004 11:38AM PST

Are you using 80-connector ATA type cables? Even though it worked, a possible cable problem could be at fault. If you haven't already reload the mtrbd. IDE-channel drivers as a last resort. When it pooped the 1st time, was anything new done before hand, like new update(s) or s/w, etc..

good luck -----WIlly

1. Latest BIOS and motherboard/usb/video/audio/other DRIVERS?

2. A new install of XP opens the door to the new worms. Tell how you detect that there is no worm, and what you use for the second opinion there is no trojan/worm/virus/pest/parasite.

3. Many dig in their feet on item 1 "because it worked before." Sadly, today is not yesterday and all I can do is share my methods to remove potential causes.

1. going through lots of problems

Name them by give the full detail of every message displayed because of them. In addition:

a. The article [Q308427] states that an "event" is any significant occurrence in the system or in a program that requires users to be notified or an entry be added to one of three logs. The Event Log Service records application, security, and system events in Event Viewer that can help identify and diagnose the source of current system problems, or help predict potential system problems.

b. The article [Q314084] describes how to gather more information about an error message that appears on a blue screen but may not provide conclusive answers and may only point you to another problem. Using Pstat.exe, a Resource Kit utility run from the command line, you are given a picture of the processes and drivers that are currently running. By using the starting address in the "LoadAddr" column, you can match the exception address to the driver name nearest and is most likely the driver that called the exception.

2. freezes EVERY single time i try and burn a CD

a. With what software?

b. What is the manufacturer and model of CD-RW?

c. Have you reinstalled the software?

d. Have you tried a Restore?

e. What has changed in the recent past on this computer?

1. going through lots of problems

--> I don't get error messages, the PC just completely freezes when trying to burn a CD.

2. freezes EVERY single time i try and burn a CD

a. With what software?

--> I have tried Burning with Windows Media Player, Nero version 5, Nero Version 6

b. What is the manufacturer and model of CD-RW?

--> I have used both my Xtasy CD drive, and my Sony DVDr/CDr combo drive, both with the same result.

c. Have you reinstalled the software?

-->yes, I have formatted my drive, and then reinstalled the programs roughly 3 times.

d. Have you tried a Restore?

-->after put in the new hard drive i don't see a reason to do a system restore.

e. What has changed in the recent past on this computer?

--> the Memory on the PC went bad, so it was replaced. Hard Drive was formatted and new sound card installed...no other changes

1. The article [Q286350] discusses Autodump+ (ADPlus.vbs) a new tool from Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS) which is a console-based Microsoft Visual Basic script that can be used to troubleshoot any process or application that stops responding (hangs) or fails (crashes).

2. Look in the Event Viewer anyway just to satisfy yourself that nothing is written there.

3. Ensure you follow Bob's advice. And, be sure the correct video adapter drivers are installed.
