Just sharing.

Today's drivers don't seem to support this in the elder oses. They should. I found that for some cards, I get to reboot.

Does that work?

Help on windows 98 SE problem with cable connection

I have the same problem. (Windows 98SE, Belkin ethernet card, same error message.)

My hard drive burned out in early March, and since then I can not connect to the Internet.

I am still struggling for a solution.

In your case...

It's likely the OS is not installed correctly. It's a very old OS and no version of Windows had all the drivers ready so the owner would install Windows and use the machine.

my D-link router does this for me. Have you considered a router?

Probably not 98se

I still use 98se on the Windows side and never had a problem with an external or internal ethernet card. Did you 1. uninstall old ethernet card, Shutdown, put in new card, bootup, install drivers from disc supplied with card? Also have 98se disc handy just in case. Unless you
are paying for a Static IP Address, you should not have to worry about changing the DCHP. Your ISP doesn't that automatically. I may be missing something here, if so I appologize. But I doubt it. chuck
