Help on using my startup control panel please

by cooljew / April 23, 2004 2:03 AM PDT

Hi. I have built a small militia to protect my computer from outside influences and also (hopefully) to keep it running smoothly. I have ME to which I've added AVAST for my virus protection and ZONE ALARM for my firewall. They both seem to be adequate. I have also added AD AWARE and SPYBOT. Yesterday some new recruits completed basic training and have joined the battalion. I have EASY CLEANER for my registry and WINDOW WASHER for: (here I'm stumped. I don't know what its for). I also have STARTUP CPL to supposedly manage my startup and help exclude wasteful programs that slow me down. But after installing the startup program I don't know what to do with it. It says it was installed but no panel appears. Does it work in the background? There has been no error message. I presumed there would be an actual startup panel with options to choose from. Am I incorrect? Also, have I overdone my protection? Are some of these programs redundant? I tend to go with any suggestions from those more knowledgable than me (everyone!) and therefore I may have loaded far more protection programs than I actually need. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long post.

PS. I have broadband for my ISP and my computer is usually left on all of the time.

Thank you a million times for such a quick response. I'd a thought that this link you gave me would have been supplied on the download itself. (seems logical, doesn't it). Thanks again.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
