1. What OS (Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP)?

2. What do you mean exactly? Removing the programs from Start/Programs menu or removing them from the list of programs that run 'automatically' after starting the system. I wouldn't call the first 'start up' and I wouldn't call the last 'icons'. So I simply don't understand the question.

The OS is Windows XP and what I meant was How do I remove them from the list of programs that run automatically after starting the system. I was told this is the reason why some of my programs on the pc are not responding. And the pc is running kinda slow. Thanks for your help.

Start/Run/type in msconfig/ok/
Select the start up tab. All of the items with a check mark will start when the computer is booted.
If you're having a problem with slow boot-up, first be sure that your computer is free from spyware, adware, and other parasites. Then you can uncheck any item which you do not need to run.

When on XP, don't forget the services tab next to the Startup tab in MSCONFIG. And check it in the Services Manager, to be found in Start/Programs.
When in doubt about certain services, post your doubts here.
