To make matters worse, the sort appears to change with versions of Windows.
Reading http://www.pctools.com/guides/registry/detail/1293 you see this sorting changed as Windows changed.
Try that registry setting. You can always undo that if that's not what you want.

I have my files arranged in one folder in List, like so.
01
02
03
01a
02a
03a
I had to drag files into the folder like that and it automatically put itself under the other in the order I dropped it in.
When I go to make a new folder to do the same thing with other files, it drops in like this..
01
01a
02
02a
03
03a
and I don't want it like that. I want it to be the first part. I remember when I first was trying to get it the way above and managed to, that I right clicked, click "Sort by" and was trying out a whole bunch of different settings in "more" so that the folder would automatically configure the way that I wanted. Later I found out that I had to drop the file in. I don't remember what settings I selected in "more". I pretty much just deleted those settings off after it didn't work.
I copied the working folder onto desktop, deleted the files within, put the other files in, (All good.) renaming it to one of the other folders that I freshly made, deleted the original folder that didn't work, cut and pasted the folder from desktop into the location and it went back to this..
01
01a
etc.
How can I change these settings back to the way that I want it? I've been playing around with a folder for ages now and it's annoying me.
I right clicked into the folder that works, it's in "List", looked at "Sort by" and the only thing ticked it the "Ascending" box.
I just want to organize my thigns the way I want it.
