I recently bought my first mac and i figured i cant play alot of media files on quicktime. Dose anyone know of a good alterntive that plays all media files types including divix and avi. thanks andrew

I'd use VLC, but if you absolutely have to play the files from within Quicktime player you can get DivX 6 for mac at:
http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
Just do the free download. You'll be able to use the decoder even after the 6 month trial.
You might also try this one:

It does Xvid as well.
