Help on HDMI connection on Onkyo SR702

Whats the best way to utilize HDMI video and audio signals thru my SR702? I guess running the HDMI cables (one for sat box and one for blu-ray) straight to the Panasonic 50" 720p then use optical audio to the receiver for sound. Will I be losing alot by not using the HDMI audio signal?

HD satellite HDMI to my Sony 55" SXRD, optical fiber audio to my Denon receiver.

Samsung upconverting DVD player HDMI to the TV, digital coax to the receiver.

There is no need to use the receiver or DVD for regular TV. When something comes on that I want 7.1 sound, I turn on the receiver.

Makes sense to me.
