Help! Notebook computer power sometimes shuts off repeatedly

I have this notebook computer :
HP Compaq Presario CQ50-210US

OS is : Vista Home Premium

My computer is only a year old.

My computer will sometimes turn off power by itself while in use-no error messages appear.

Upon trying to turn it back on manually, it refuses to complete booting and will shut off again in mid boot, then when I try to turn it back on it shuts off again in mid boot. It refuses to reach the desktop.

The only way to get the desktop to appear (I'm using it now) is it use debugging mode or last known configuration.

This happens randomly, no pattern to it. And it's been about 2 weeks since the last time it did this - the last time it did this was the first appearance of this issue, this is the 2nd appearance.

I can't get on HP online chat for help because their chat only works with Internet Explorer but to install the Active X the chat asks for I have to enter my admin password, but for an unknown reason IE8 won't take my admin password at all so chat is out of the question (the admin password works ok everywhere else, btw).

If anyone has fix for this, please let me know.

Thanks.

P.S. I've checked all connections, and the surge protector (which is new) and these all check out.

P.S. Also, I've had Qwest internet and their modem for 2 months. I mention this in case this could be the problem, like maybe it's sending the notebook a weird signal or something? Just guessing as to what it may be. Think on this if it's useful.

Get it back to HP

Do not waste your time with chat as you approach your one year date you don't want to go past that with a broken laptop as repairs cost more than a new machine. If you are offered some warranty extension take it.

Now get on the PHONE and call it in.

I've found the solution - it was overheating

In reply to: Help! Notebook computer power sometimes shuts off repeatedly

I'd forgotten I had removed the cooling pad from underneath the notebook because I wanted to see if these things actually made any difference - that's when this problem started.

So I checked the underside of the notebook and found it was way hotter than before when I had the cooling pad under it. I also checked older posts here in this forum and found that the problem I had was due to overheating. All this evidence means I overheated it so the cooling pad is back now - sure enough the computer has started back up fine because of it.

No wonder I read that overheating can cause, among other things, a computer to keep shutting down. They were right!

Thanks for the help anyway but I solved it myself.
