Help - New to Linux, Want to know about networking with XP

by Mase Trax / December 31, 2004 4:56 AM PST

Ok,

Im quite new to linux, and want to know how I would go about sharing an internet connection.

My father has Windows Xp home ediiton on his pc in the living room, this is connected to a hub which has a dsl router connected to it. I want to share this internet connection with a linux box in my room over the 10/100 cable. My pc is currently connected to the hub aswell via a 10/100. I have linux mandrake 10.1 ready to roll, and am just wanting to know how to go about the networking. File/Printer sharing is not an issue as I have a printer set up already in my room, just the net connection

I'm fairly new to this linux thing..so please be gentle Happy

Thanks in advance

Ryan

For me... it just worked.

During the install Mandrake 10 asked if I wanted to enable DHCP. I answered yes and it just worked.

If I were you, I'd answer yes too.

When networking routers and gateways don't care (or know) what operating system is accessing it. If connected and set-up right, then it should work just as if you were using windows. Sharing files between linux and windows is another story.

networking linux mandrake 9.1
by johndeb / January 16, 2005 9:54 PM PST

Hi, I am new to this method and we are trying to network our HP Printer, Copier, Scanner to our Linux! With no luck! We are running Mandrake 9.1
The print manager in Mandrake 9.1 would allow to set up the scanner but not the printer!
could someone help with this solution?
